Rear Spring Preload

Is it necessary to remove the rear shock from the bike to adjust the spring preload? The service manual is a little confusing on the subject. First it says to remove the spring, then it shows an illustration of how to do it with the spring still on the bike. Which is it? Does anyone have experience with this? I think Toolman may have some knowledge. Thanks

remove right footpeg, penetrating lube ( not KY LOL) punch and hammer to unlock top ring spanner wrench to adjust, punch and hammer to lock up.

Made quite a bit of differernce, alot less squat under throttle, but does still move around a bit.
Unless you weigh 140 lbs, get the correct rate spring from Schnitz or Race tech.
Forks are even worse, so make sure you order fork springs too. Otherwise the front will bottom bad with stiff rear.

I mentioned in some other post that I'm about 6'4/320. I absolutely understand that I'll eventually need to get aftermarket springs. But, in the meantime, I gotta work with the stock ones. For big dudes like me, I'm supposed to adjust the rear (& front) so that the springs are longer instead of compressing them, right? The longer they are w/out me on the bike will help when I put my big ass on the bike, right? Please correct me if I've got this wrong.

turn the collar clockwise, tightens the spring pressure, extends the shock length, and puts more pressure on the spring.
The shock will be longer but the spring will be shorter.
Thats why they call it preload, you are loading the spring, without the rider.
Back off the top collar by turning counter clockwise, then crank the bottom caller clockwise, compressing the spring, this will extend the shock, and the height of the bike.
The ride will be somewhat stiffer, but will still bottom as easily as the spring rate has not changed, just the tension on it initially.
Crank the fork spring preaload nutz clockwise as well.
I would increase compression damping as well.

screwed the fork spring pre load all the way in and increased the rear spring pre load and it rides stiff but handles great. i go 260.
by turning the fork spring pre load all the way in it does lower the front some but does not bottom as it did with the stock settings.
l like the handling for aggressive riding.
