I'd like to see you panic brake when a car pulls into your lane.

Like wearing full leathers in 100degree summer heat for a 5 minute ride,, ABS seems like a useless feature until you really need it. From my experience, it only spoils the ride when you're riding the bike like a superbike on a race-track (not drag strip)

Everywhere else, it gives a good peace of mind, especially when riding in the wet or over slippery surfaces.

Anyway, I love that color, too bad I bought the 2006 model.

You need more practice panic braking. I panic brake every time I see a dog or someone coming out of a sidestreet. Proper braking will stop you faster than ABS, even in the rain. When ever the surface changes in the rain I brake check the back wheel to see how much traction I got, that helps a lot. You should of course give yourself a LOT of room to stop in the rain too.

If you're so sure, then why do you wear back protectors, armoured leather suits, boots, gloves and a full face?

ABS is like any of the above items. Its not nessesary, expensive, intrusive, but you'd wish you had it when the time comes. Whether you want it or not is up to you, but please don't bash ABS just because you don't like it.

I choose the ABS model because I pillion my wife alot, its just another additional safety feature in addition to the $2k of gear I spent on her.

abs will help control the wheel lock up which result in losing control, but it will not give you any shorter stopping distance. will be more effective in slippery(wet) road but we should not get too confident becuase of abs.... it can bite you in the ass.

While a nice option I wouldn't NOT buy the bike because of that. I am not so sure that it can't be added when looking at the service manual.........but it would probably cost a lot. I don't ride in the rain and I can probably stop as good as the ABS in the dry - and I like to be able to lock-up. I do braking practice in a local parking lot.......I recommend everyone do that a few times a year.....

Without the chance to ride the 14 with the ABS, I cannot comment on the specific model... however, I have driven cars with ABS that could NOT stop worth a crap.... of course that was several years ago. Now they are getting a lot better. My point is that just because it has ABS does not 'always' mean that it is better or safer. We get the point that ABS makes sense, but sometimes the feedback from the ABS causes some very frustrating braking. Now I understand that the ABS on the BMW is leaps and bounds better than the Japanese bikes... (again, that is what I heard from bike riding friends). I heard some crazy stuff about the linked braking systems also. Just because it is ABS, don't think it is insurance against getting bit! It is still going to come down to how well you can ride a bike... and how good the system is on your particular bike. There is no argument that if a good ABS system is used, it is going to be better in a panic situation... but it also is going to "dumb you down", so you are not as able to control a motorcycle. Lastly... I am not against ABS... but I am not going to buy into the fact that if it is ABS, it is better... it depends on so many things. I have seen airbags save life and limb in cars... and have seen them cause damage in low impact accidents... good with the bad... just make sure to test drive and read reviews before donning your leathers and helmet and thinking that your braking is automatic... Just my opinion...

Having never tried the ZX14ABS (obviously) nor read any tests on that particular aspect of its specification, I can only assume that it works well.
About twenty years ago the first bikes to have it were I believe the Beemers, and the clunky Bosch system that they had, came in for some criticism for being unrefined. Nowadays I'm assuming the systems do what they're intended to do, and do it well. Based on that assumption I want my next bike to have the system.
To those that suggest learning to brake properly I agree. Everyone should learn how to control their bike to the fullest. Personally I didn't get a car until I was 29 - prior to that my sole modes of transport were my bikes. I rode year round for twelve years in all sorts of weather including snow and ice on many occasions. I've had both streetbikes and dirtbikes for 33 years...I know how to brake!
I want ABS because I understand its value. If you really are a skilled rider you may never invoke its intervention. If you're a less skilled rider and you never find yourself in a situation where it intervenes, then that's good as well - it would remain invisible to you.
If it activates just once chances are it just saved, as a minimum, paint, levers, turn signals etc. At best it may save your life.
I go back to my original statement. I'm disappointed that I can't buy the bike I want, to the spec. that I know is available. I don't understand the mentality that prevents so many models from being available here in N. America.

i would take the abs because it has nothing to do with how fast you stop, but more on the panic side/ emergency. when something pulls out in front of you and you panic brake and slide front tire out from under you, then you would wish you had it. it happens to everyone so dont flame. even professional riders wreck, everyone. imo it would be a safety feature that wouldnt hurt performance

Thus far, as "good" as ABS may be today, I have yet to drive a vehicle where the ABS doesn't freak out and sense a false lock-up due to road hazards.

As an example, on my commute everyday there is a transition from pavement to concrete 25 feet from a light. No matter how many times they grind the pavement lip that expands over the concrete, you still get air (maybe 1" off the ground) for about a second if you happen to hit it and brake hard for the light turning red.

Same thing for the sewer cap thats 1" below ground at the next light.

Every single car and truck I've owned has reacted the same when the wheel is momentarily above ground (as above). It senses wheel lock, applies ABS, and when the wheel hits the ground things get squirrely.

I would not buy a bike with ABS. The computer may react in miliseconds, but it doesn't have eyes like I do.

As far as the panic stop? Don't put yourself there to begin with, right?

A panic stop in a car is bad. A bike is worse. Arguably (and we are using the word "panic") this is something that shouldn't happen if we are focused, yes?

I'm glad you mentioned that. About the time I get old enough for a bike with luggage I'll also opt for the ABS option. Hopefully about the same time I'll qualify for a senior citizen discount at my local track!
