Pic of my bike, let's hope this works!

Some may remember me dropping my bike back in the summer and my decision to paint to whole thing from blk to gry. These were threads from like June 06 when it happened, I was attempting to paint the bike myself (and I did a pretty good job I think). Eitherhow, I had some gray paint (1 qrt) remaining for another project I did (see car in background). I then got 1 pint of blk and mixed that whole pint of black with 1/2 qrt of the gray. When mixed the paint in the can looked about as close to black as you could get without actually being black. So, I mixed, shot and let dry and here are my results. It's wearing like 2 coats of paint and 3 coats of clear easily. I did the work in my garage (cleaned out very well and hung plastic up to seperate, rigged up a fan for exhaust and left the door open about 1 ft so air could flow). Took a solid weekend to do all the pieces, so only 3 each time got shot, then taken inside while the other got painted. Once all parts complete, then start all over using clear coat (gosh that stuff is messy to work with). I know others have either painted or had their bikes painted. I had all the equipment except gun (cost $160 or so). The actual paint materials were under $200 so, for me the answer to paint the whole bike was a simple one. Still, hope you all enjoy the pics and sorry its taken me this long (6 months) to get them posted. Oh, and I painted everything, mirrors and grills included. The pics with the Givi bags was taken about 2 weeks after the others; I was somewhere in S. Dakota (riding from MT to MI: 1,875 miles one way, two days to get there, 17 hrs riding per day).

Phil,
I'm sure that was a hell of a lot of work and I also think it looks pretty dam good as well.

Here here to (2) 17 hour days, I'm sure it was a joy to ride. I always find it somewhat romantic planning and talking about the trip afterward. Not always so much during the trip. Bet you can't wait til your next trip...How quickly we forget. Well at least I'm funny like that.

The bags were a real pain during this trip. They were perhaps as tightly tide as I could get them (compressed against the bike even), and still they would slide from side to side, almost like one side had to much weight in it. I was constantly reaching back and adjusting those suckers. When I returned from my trip there was a wear point on the paint on one side, down to the plastic, about the size of a quarter. Hard bags would be ideal for a trip like this but they cost way too much, so I had to work with what I had. They were intentionally strapped high up becasue there was only like 1.5 inches between them and the exhaust, mainly the tips and if they were level they would have sat/rested on the exhaust right out. Not easy to work with, but they did the job. The lesson learned here is easy; next time I'll ship my clothing items out a week ahead of time to my destination (side bag items), and just carry the tail pack and tank bag with minimal items. Glad you appreciate my efforts!

Planning a full western U.S. coastal trip this July; 10 states in 10-12 days...

Thanks,

Bike looks sweet man! VERY good work.

One thing you could try is put on 2 or 3 layers of clear tape on the tailsection where the bags will rub. And put them on sloppy with plenty of air pockets. Bags are gonna move around reguardless so This should help prevent any rubbing on the paint.

Looks Great. I really like the color. A sporty sport-tourer and probably 100 lbs. lighter than the upcoming Concours. Hard to make any soft luggage work at the speeds the 14 can produce. The 14 really is the best do-it-all bike.

RR - That's a sweet lookin' ride! I've always been partial to dark gray's / platinum... I sure wish Kawi offered one in that color here in the US. And I like the true gray over Kawi's gray/green they offer overseas too.

Great job!!

The Corbin bags are great for trips, just did 1000miles in 2 days between Houston and New Orleans. They are pricey though. They create some drag but are very stable at high speeds. I've been up to 180mph actual with no issues. I do have some spots rubbed in the paint but it's covered by the bag. The left side bag rubbed a large hole in the paint all the way to the plastic on the pointed part of the rear fairing, right in front of the blinker. I think it was my fault for mount the bag too far back but the instructions didn't mention the issue of damaging paint.

Great paint job though, I have some experience in the paint industry, and it looks like you did a very good job, from what I can tell from the pics anyway.
