Cool as f**k and gorgeous, but for the money.....if I was going to spend it on bikes in 2007 I would get a ZX6R and a KTM SuperdukeR

Wow I see on my local dealer's web page 14,995 for the straight up 1098. And with those specs I'll go look at one for sure with an open mind as my quest for a second bike continues.

I don't see any passenger pegs maybe I'm blind or maybe Ducati considers this such a race bike that unlike our jap friends they couldn't afford the weight of pegs!?

Ducs come as Monoposto or Biposto. Monoposto is a single seater. No p-seat, no p-pegs.

Thanks for explaining. I looked at the specs of this bike and "dual seat" is listed as an option. So I guess its sold in "Biposto" mode and "Monoposto" is an option. I guess a bowl of spaghetti and the p-pegs come with the dual seat option as well. In a well-hidden way its getting further and further from the Jap price bike again, I don't see "dual seat" listed for an R1 as option. I'm still open-minded- Do you know if the maintenance costs is inline with the big four jap bikes as well?

Fuck no. Maintenance on a Duc is hideous. Short intervals and extensive list of items, including a total chassis teardown every 12k I think. Gorgeous bike, just not for the masses.

It is a Photoshop type alteration but it still shows what the bike would look like in black.

Sweet bike... it would really be a huge decision to make in terms of a streetbike. The price is definitely an eye catcher...with Japanese liter bikes approaching high 11s for MSRP now. Shoot... Yamaha wanted close to $20k for a bolt on equipped R1 last year. Maybe wait it out a few years to get one of the better equipped "R" models on the used market....
Somehow, deep in my heart I know I would probably tire of the lack of HP, regardless of how well the chassis is sorted. Who knows??? Plus with all the cop heat on the street , stupid tickets, endless court appearences...really has me considering nixing street riding from the activities roster. Better to take it to the track... (damn I must be getting old!)

Sorry..... thats been the story. Been to court 3 times now on the same stupid charge. The latest turn was from yet another rookie prosecuter claiming the state is going to present "video evidence" of my deed in court (and trying to use the element of suprise). I told my lawyer, "Good..this will finally be over with!!"... he laughed. The tape is a fucking joke and actually helps my case. Talk about Keystone cops
I do take satisfaction that my lawyer is actually earning his money....lol. I dont think he anticipated this much court action and silliness for $1200. Like I should feel sorry for him...he drives an 05 Cayenne Turbo....lol

You all keep talking about the value vs. the performance of the italian bikes...but they are priced that way on purpose. Like all italian vehicles they are intentionally priced higher to keep them more exclusive. Lots of cars outperform Ferraris and such for less money...but you dont see one everyday either...and the same is true of italian 2 wheelers. They generally arent aimed at the type of purchaser that buys Japanese bikes. They, however, like all italian vehicles are works of art in the looks department. I cant ride one though..my big ass would look like a monkey doing bad things to a football on one of those little bikes. Just my $.02.

There is no "Italian" conspiracy on pricing. I think Ducati is wanting to expand sales... and offering a fairly priced bike within striking distance of the best Japanese liter bikes is the way to do it.
Say Ducati put some shitbox cast enkei wheels on the 1098 or some potmetal Tokico brakes... the price would be inline with your average liter bike. Of course why would you buy the inferior equipped, less hp Ducati then anyway?

gotta say that the years I owned my Duc I was NEVER disappointed.... and the lack of horsepower was more than made up for by the gobbs of torque!

It's that Canadian diminished expectations baggage. Here in the first world we notice the missing ponies. My buddy has a built 998 with 80+ ft lbs. My stock gixxer 1000 drops him like a bad habit no matter how good a drive he gets out of the corner. That would give me migraines.

Comparing the Duck to a Jap litre bike isn't fair unless you're comparing it to a tiller or RC51. The Italians have two less cylinders making it a bit apples and oranges. As stated, people who buy these don't treat them as an "appliance".
