Question for my first oil change?

I changed oil today and looking in the owner book one Page said 4.1 us QTs with filter on another page it said 4.3 with a filter ?? What's right? I filled it to the line with just 4 Qts ....I did notice that the filter i used had part number (last number on the filter) 002 is a bit shorter, it calls for an 004 that is a bit longer... The shorter 002 is a high pressure filter for the zx10 and other sport bikes and it's fits the zx14 fine ....I hope i didn't mess up.....Sorry that was two Questions ....

As long as the level is between the marks in the sight glass when the bike is vertical, the exact amount doesn't really matter that much.

Put in 4 quarts, start it, make sure you have oil pressure, then turn if off. Let the bike sit for a few minutes, then top it off to the appropriate level. Mine took around 4.25, but I'm also using the -0004 filter.

smokin....... The only difference between the 2 filters is the company that manufactures them......0002 is made by Toyo Roki, 0004 is made by Denso.
There are some visual differences if you look inside of the but the both do the same thing and thats filter oil, there are NO pressure differences.

And what you are talking about in your ownres manual is.... 4.1 qts. WITHOUT the filter being changed and 4.3 qts. WITH the filter changed.

So please tell me Kawasaki did a better job on the fairing fastener arrangement on the 14 than they did on the 12?!

I just changed oil @ 407 miles in the R1 today and what a treat it was compared to my 12 (although I am getting pretty good at doing the twelve, it's still a pain in the ass)....

Six Dzus 3/4 fasteners and two hex head bolts and the whole lower drops away. God what I wouldn't give for the 12 to have a setup like that.

Was the 14 a joy or not so joyful, or ?

It was slightly joyful, but not all the way past joyful, which would be blissful, kind of an A- joyful, sadly it had a touch distasteful at the end.

TOOL MAN we in VEGAS
The 14 is the easiest oil change bike I have ever owned. NO fairing removal needed!!
The filter was on very!!! tight from the factory but after that the second change was one MEELLION x easier. It took about 4.2 qts with 004 filter.

Excellent!

I'm a firm believer in you should NOT have to re-invent the wheel to change oil in a sportbike.

14guy, I take it you don't want to go into details? LOL

+1 on Tool Man / Girlee comment... I don't know how much easier an oil change can be... shallow pan, spin the filter off, drain the oil, spin new filter on, fill oil. One pan, no mess, no plastic has to come off, no centerstand or rear stand needed, plenty of clearance if you have a slightly shallow catch pan. This bike is TONS easier than my ZZR was!

The oil change and filter is the easyist of any vehicle I have ever owned. Just for a thought----the filter on a 22hp Kawasaki cub cadet will also fit----I did not say use it, just that it fits.

I haven't done it yet, but it looks like NOTHING has to be removed to do an oil change!

Blitz, I have a question for you. I can't find a filter for a ZX14 anywhere and it'll need changed this week at DG. Would YOU use a filter for 10R or just change the oil? If the latter, would you remove the filter, drain it, prefill and reinstall it or leave it alone?

Thanks, Scott

Filter was sooo tight I crushed it , and finally shoved a screw driver through it to get it off!

Was starting to sweat a little, thinking, what if I tear the filter off the base!

My pan was too large so I had to buy a shallower one, and I removed the bottom left side lower fairing just so I could take a look. It was easy to remove the lower with 5 total bolts and one plastic popper holding it to the other half of the lower. Oil change was 30 minutes start to finish, just because I wanted to take my time and see what was down there. I couldn't believe all the metal particulates in the oil though, it was shocking. On the plus side the trans is even smoother shifting than before and at 180 mph indicated she sounds like she has a turbo charger with the intake whine. I love this bike.

tslewisz, I'd definitely replace the filter if it's your first oil change. There is a shit ton of metal particulate matter in that first oil and if you run that too long on the first filter, I'd imagine you'll get clogging and some of that crap might pass back into the engine. I'd rather get the ZX-12 filter (part number 16097-0002) which does fit the ZX-14 (part number 16097-0004) than to leave the original on.

Tough call. Do you have time to pick up a Purolater Pure One PL14610 or PL14612?

I just put a PL14612 on the R1 and it fits perfect, has a better anti drainback seal than the OEM and generally beats the hell out of just about all filters including OEM.

The PL14610/PL14612 fit the 12 too (the former being 3 1/4 " the latter being 2 3/4"). I went with the 14612 because it is almost identical to the R1 OEM. filter and should duplicate the pressure perfectly. I'm going to start running the PL14610 on the 12, but I had a stockpile of 1070's from Ron Ayers I had to use up.

I don't think I would leave the break-in filter in regardless. I dumped the break-in oil on the R1 @ 400 miles and would hate to leave that crap in there longer than 500-600 miles..

Mine took exactly 4 QTS with filter last week...and the level is right between the lines on the sight glass, right where it should be...

Same filter as a zx12r, the gasket is aluminum.
Good for several oil changes!
