Oil Filter
My dealer JUST got oil filters in today. I'm heading there now to pick one up and change the oil tonight.
Guys that are picking up bikes soon - make sure to tell your dealer to order a filter for you ASAP. Part number 16097-0004.
By the way, oil changes on this bike look like they will be a PIECE OF CAKE!! There is a bunch of room because the header is swept off to the side, so the filter is in plain view. Also, the drain plug is less than 3" away from the filter. We won't even have to move the oil drain pan to change the oil on these things

Nice to hear it. I'm thinking if they have oil filters in stock by the time I buy mine, I may just take one with so I can change my oil as soon as the first 600 are done.

So I gather the oil filter is unique to the '14...................not the same as a 10R or 6R.......seems strange it would not be the same as their other newer design engines.

Yea there is a heads up for sure. I hate new oil filters always too tight. I've never had a problem with 1/4 turn past hand tight.

Physically, I doubt if there is much of a difference.
I posted this a different thread... (edited to better answer your question)
When the 12R first came out, there was a several month delay before most of the dealers had access to oil filters for the 12R. KMC issued a Technical Bulletin that a "acceptable" substitute for the 16097-1070 filter would be a 16097-1063 until the 12R filters became available.
At that time, the 1063 filter was the most common filter used on everything from four wheelers to half of the bike line. I never used a 1070 on my 12R, since the 1063 was a lot cheaper.
Now, the 1070 has been superseded by 16097-0002 filter. This is the filter for the 12R, 10R, 636/6RR and several other inline four cylinder models. I think their "catch-all" 1063 filter has been replaced by something like the 1072 (not sure).
Since the 0004 is now available, I doubt KMC would say a 0002 could be an accetable substitute.

I got $20 that says there is a Pure1 on the shelves of your local Advance Auto that will fit your zx-14 just fine and is 3x the filter the OEM is for 1/3 the cost.
The PL14610 (3.25"") and PL14612 (2.5") fit both my zx-12 and R1.
If you fall for all the crap the manufacturers/dealers tell you about OEM filters I'm not going to debate with you, but consider that most OEM filters are pretty shiity when put into the Pepsi Challenge.
Here is a link I like that cuts through the B.S.:

Holy tight filters Batman!!! Right there with ya Tool Man... that filter was put on with an impact wrench. I had to adapt my 3/4 drive 1000ft-lb wrench to get that sucker off!
Well... it may have not been that bad
That sucker was TIGHT. Compound that with the fact that the filter is tiny and even my smallest filter wrench was too big. I ended up folding 2 red shop rags into quarters, put them on top of each-other, then over the top of the filter. That gave me enough friction to SLOWLY turn the filter off. It was TIGHT AS HELL!
Oil is now changed @ 609 miles. Now I'm ready for some redline runs

The oil filter fiasco happened back in 2000 with the ZX12 as well. It turned out that a very common car filter that had a little bit more capacity actually fit the 12 and worked well. Can't remember the details anymore, I have slept since. Chances are that the same thing will happen for the 14.

Talk about Fiasco's...I remember guys using bullshit oil filters and having problems because they're too F'n cheap to spend the $$$ on an OEM filter that will not cause motor problems!!!
Thats penny wise dollar foolish

Great site for cross referencing, Purolators worked wonderfully for my 12, but I also just basically had the bike in touring mode and didn't race it much.

Just changed to oil at 100 miles. That has to be about the easiest oil change I've ever done! No need to remove any bodywork, filter set away from headers so no dripping on the pipes, and as mentioned above, filter and drain plug right next to each other.
I was going to wait until 600, but I'm glad I did it now. There was quite a lot particles in the oil. Will do it again at 600, then change to synthetic at 2500.

No need to remove panels, sweet! If I remember right, on the 12R, you had to at least separate the bottom panels enough to gain access to the filter.
