Radar Detector Mount - Techmounts/V1

I played around with the Techmounts control mount on the 14 last night. I like the solution, but it's going to take a little fine tuning. The location works pretty well - I think it gets the V1 up above the instruments sufficiently that it shouldn't hinder range too badley, and it only blocks less than 1/4 of the speedo (0-40mph).

I have sent Techmount a bunch of pictures, along with suggestions for a fork-tube mount like they have designed (but not yet released?) for the '06 ZX-10R. I think I'd like that setup better - you'd see less "stuff".

Not too bad. I'll be looking to do something similar with my V1, but I also wanted to look at a split mount (two pads) for the steering head stem. I have to mount my V1 and a GPS eventually.

I'm a RAM distributor and I have used the stem mount setup for my GPS...with a ball that sits on the stem in the center of the bars...I mount my Garmin 2720's there. Have it setup that way on the 10R and was done that way on the Busa as well....I can post pics later of the entire setup...it a great setup...even for a V1.

They have split mounts for this system, but it's hard to get everything down low enough so they won't block the speedo. If you had two items on this setup, you'd end up blocking the lower 1/2 of the speedo while you're in a sitting position. If you were in a moderate "tuck", I doubt you'd be able to see much of the speedo at all...

Unfortunately, there is simply no other place than control or stem to mount on our bike. I thought about something attached to the mirror brace, but unless it moves *with* the handlebars, it'll be in the way.

Looks a little tight in the cockpit on the 14? Is there any place to put a Halmeter AF LED meter? I used one of those with my 12R to tune in a really nice fuel map, and plan on doing the same with the 14. Any thoughts?

The Halmeter is actually quite large, I have thought about taking it apart, putting the 3 LED graphs into a smaller more compact package with a wiring harness that goes to the "brains" elsewhere. Haven't decided if I want to rip apart a $140 item do to this though, but may have to if there is no place to mount it on the 14.

That mount for the V1 looks pretty good though, does it interfere with line of sight of the speedo? Maybe they could design a mount that goes to the fairing/windshield frame down either side. The painted plastic won't do anything to the detection, except for laser, so having it down behind the sides shouldn't hurt anything.

Because I didn't think it would reach that far over (out of the way) without a hell-of-a-long bar on it... too much distance. I want to be able to see as much of the gauges as possible, and get the radar HIGH so it won't be blocked by all of the electronics in the gauge cluster. I want an electronically unshielded view out the front if at all possible.

Sure, I could have used the stem mount like you did for the cam, but the radar would have to be so high up that I wouldn't be able to see the gauges. Not to mention having to "reach around" all that junk to get the key out...

prob is not the mount, but that you have the wrong radar detector... we'll be posting our radar shootout shortly.

I think that unit is way too bulky for mouting anywhere in the cockpit. There are many modern detectors out there that are much more compact.

Oh here we go... let's talk about radar detectors now. Why don't we go ahead and throw in the synthetic versus dino oil argument, tire brand discussion, and break-in procedures...

Let the games begin

I was looking on their website and it looks like the fairing mount might work well. It would keep it off the handlebars and still would get it up away from the gauges.

I thought that too, but if you moved it out of the way of the bars, you wouldn't be able to see the gauges. This 14 is surprisingly tight under the faring. I've talked with Dee at Techmounts, they will have a prototype fork-tube clamp mount within a week or two that I'm going to try out. They made one for the new 10R and the fork tubes are the same external diameter.

Possibly a windshield mount would be best.

I've got one of those. Wanna buy it from me?

The Legal Speeding guy is local to me, I've tried all of his stuff. His "Heads Up Display" is AWESOME, and the adjustable windscreen mount is a nice piece too, but that old-generation windscreen mount in the link above pointed the radar dector too far down when mounted on my ZZR and severely reduced it's range. I switched to his adjustable windscreen mount and it worked much better. The problem with the AWM on the ZX-14 is that it would block the entire computer display if you levelled it out.

I have both sitting in my garage.... make me an offer

The size is difficult to see on the pic. I'll take your word on it.

It's not so much of a size thing with that mount, it's the angle. It would probably work *better* on the 14 since the screen lays down at more of an angle than my ZZR did, and if you kept it flat against the screen, you could probably see the computer ok. The "adjustable* mount would be pointless on this bike because if you tilted the radar down any at all, you would block the computer.

Those mounts are made by Legal Speeding. The owner, Aaron, is a local rider and a really nice guy. I *REALLY* like his Heads Up display unit - it's the best invention EVER! It works with the V1 and modern Passport units that us a RJ-11 power plug.
