The key is the "bored out katana " has a estimated 200 rear wheel hp.
even if they overestimate it stock with pipe and tuning with good gas it will be
atleast 200hp. This is a Kawasaki the katana was a suzuki.

OK ,so a katana is a GSXR wihout the "R"hence a more docile machine than an"r"designated machine, aimed at a different market.OK I get it

zx-14 has the frame of zx-12 lineage, not ZZRs, so the handling will be much closer to zx-12
zx-14 has updated zx-12 motor, so it will have more torque and HP
zx-14 has, appears, more 'niceties' for drag racing
why everyone is saying that zx-14 does not deserve to be called the upgrade to zx-12?
just because the body work and the length is not more 'look' friendly but more 'low drag coeff. friendly' -- well wind tunnels do just that.

Well it depends on how one defines "different" and "same" with regard to similar engines of which one is the successor of the other.
The crankcases, crank, rods, pistons, and block are all different part numbers (I expect) and so you are totally justified in calling it a different engine.
On the other hand, the engine may have been designed by using the 12's motor as the starting point and it may, hypothetically, share a great deal of architecture, e.g. perhaps the bearings are all in same spatial relationship (or perhaps not); perhaps the crank is identical except for being stroked (or perhaps not); perhaps the new head would bolt onto the old engine and vice-versa (or perhaps not); perhaps the valvetrain is the exact same except for cam timing (or perhaps not), etc.
If a great deal of that is in common, then many would tend to call that an "expanded" or "updated" 12 motor even though in fact there might be no part numbers in common, just in terms of how people talk about things.
Heck, the "small-block Chevy" is still the "small-block Chevy" fifty years later... actually a lot of parts still do interchange though! But really not one part is the same, though some dimensions, e.g. bore spacing, are the same. So is it the "same" motor but updated? A philosophical question, or a practical question of how people happen to speak.

hi, when I said 'updated zx-12 motor' I meant to say that in comparasing to zzr's motor, zx-14's motor appeared to be closer to the zx-14.
This was just to support my argument against people who have been complaining that zx-14 is some how of a zzr lineage, which I do not think it is.
As far as the internat engine components... I do not know. I guess valve adjustment interval will say alot (when the service manual will become available) :-)

here is the summary of the 4 kawasaski motors
zx-10

compression 12.7:1
4 x 43mm throttle bodies
zx-12
doch 16 valve (4 valve per cyl)
1,199 cc
83x55.4
compression 12.2:1
4 x 46 mm throttle bodies
zzr-1200
DOHC 4 valve per cyl
1164cc
79 x 59.4 mm
compression 10.6:1
4x 40mm throttle bodies (not sure)

Yes, likely due to the obvious design goal of much better low-rpm performance combined with a need (or final result anyway) of making only 8 hp more on top (a crank figure, so call it 7 more hp at the rear wheel.)
Basically, the displacement and compression increase could have been worth about 18 hp at the rear wheel.
So the "missing" 11 hp went to tuning changes to give a much beefier low end and perhaps midrange, and perhaps some to emissions as well.

...the way I see this ZX-14 is: If its basically the same dimensions as the ZX-12R, but more powerful and more comfortable and with a look that may take getting used to, then riders like Dino (whom I've observed) and other big-bore savvies or 'savages' (who can vouch for themselves) will just rail on this 'pig' faster and more comfortably than on the ZX-12R while the 'wish-we-could-ride-like-themies' chase and scare themselves silly trying to keep up with them while riding and 'pretending' on more dedicated (insert you favorite litre-bike here) 'race-replica' mounts.....then what will the naysayers say about this 'fat and ugly' bike?....just my take on this.....
...in the end its all about the quality and skill of the rider, huh?....I thought so....

cant decide if I like it or not, if it lives up to expectations when I ride it I may grow to like it, looking forward to trying one out though
