Gxsr 750 used X race bikes or just used street?

Got a ZX-14 that I dont want kill doing track days. So thinking on getting either a used race bike all ready for that track OR a newer (04 -06) street bike and slowly built it into a track day/racer.
The trade off being; wqith the race bike its got all the $$$$racing bits and trick suspension on it, plus usually all the spares too. You know the crap that takes $$$ + time to gather like sprockets, extra rims, extra body parts, spare motors etc.
Then just adjust the race suspension to my weight and style.
OR...., a newer fresher street bike that needs everything but hasnt been wrecked then rebuilt into a race bike then trashed some more!!!
Will go with a gsxr 750 or a Kawi 600 or most likely 636 so dont bother with mentioning other brands or twins.
Looking forward to your input and experiences,
Thanks Tom

No response from anyone, huh? Guess I'll chime in here since I'm doing what you're talking about. I've got a '02 TL1000R I use on race day and for canyon carving. I would recommend the new bike route, get the 750 so you don't have to do big engine mods, 135-140 rwhp stock with PCIII, full exhaust, cleaner out, etc... you can expect 150 or so rwhp. plenty for a track bike with it's stellar handling. You only need extra rims, body parts, spare motors, and such if you toast the ones you're sitting on! You sound like you're going for a racing series, not track days. which is it? two different animals there, go with the used race bike from a guy whose track times are midpack at least with that bike in the same series you want to race. Talk to his fellow race teams in the paddocks after the race and get there opinion of him/her and if they would buy there bike if they were getting started. Don't throw money away trying to learn what many before you already learned: what works, what doesn't, what is a waste or repetetive use of money, etc...

Hi, I bought an old CBR600RR with cracked plastics ultra cheap. Then I bought a used race body, used tire warmers, used lap timer. spent a grand on the gold suspension job at GMD and spent a few bucks on VORTEX 520 set up regarding sprockets and such.

But you know what, compared to the guy next door I have spent CHIT compared to his boat.

Brutha I suggest do the track bike!!!

Mine is nothing fancy but I can't describe the fun. And my ZX14 doesn't get the plastics beat up on the track and the 600RR performs better than the 14 ever could on the track.

gotta admit Steve is right about the fun factor going thru the roof if you have an older bike that you can truly beat on, something that if you dump it you don't start panicking about how you're getting home or how many payments are left on it. Some of my funnest times were AFTER I paid off a bike and had another in the garage. Freedom to abuse and push your limits is priceless and necessary to knowing your true limits-and you're not experiencing it if you are worrying that "your insurance won't cover it on a track". Also, a proper setup 600 (even that old CBR Steve is rattling around the track) will not only keep up with the "new" 600's in handling and braking, with right mods you aint losing much to the bigger bikes on the straights. And there isn't a 1000 rider out there gonna brag about pulling 600's on the straights-especially when he has to work like mad to keep from losing that spot in the next corner. Most every magazine editor will repeat a version of this about track days: with a modern 1000 everything is so extreme (power delivery, higher speeds requiring more braking, heavier bike, abrupt throttle tip-in power) that riding one on a track does 2 things: first it's alot more like work, not fun. Two, being on the "premier flagship 1000" of any manufacturer tends to put pressure on you to push it hard, always, trying to keep the smaller bike's from 'showing you up'. No joke, I've seen the most mellow guys pile up there rides cuz they couldn't stand some guy on a 600 passing them. IMO the Gixxer 750 is a perfect compromise between both, weight and handling of a 600 with power to weight closer to a 1000 and no pressure to outperform yourself. Course, I'm a big guy with a small guys attitude about getting passed on a straight or corner so the TL1000R fits me just right.
