Buell gets serious?

The new Buell has a water cooled Rotax 1125cc 72 degree V-Twin, 146 HP and 84 ft-lbs torque(Crank), 10,500 rpm redline, 6 speed tranny, and a Slipper clutch.

Interesting...

interesting, and seemingly odd, to see them go with Rotax. Just doesnt fit the image. and tho pretty good numbers out of that engine, it falls short of the the competition is doing (Duc and even short of the 7yo RC51)

I imagine the fun factor of a Buell with a GOOD engine would far outweigh any power advantage that a street model superbike would have.

...and stock Ducati 996/998/999s and RC51s are 120rwhp bikes, so I doubt there's any real significant power difference.

I'd like to ride one. I've always liked the layout of the bike, just couldn't stomach the old iron hd motor

Funny thing about that image you were talking about, it was probably hurting their sales more than anything. They put that old tractor motor in their "sportbike" but put their VR1000, Porsche developed, water cooled, OHC motor into...

... another cruiser. It was a real slap in the face.

I still wouldn't look at it as a pure sportbike, more of an alternative, but when compared to the RC51 it does seem so far to have a bit more HP, lighter, and at least has a slipper clutch. This version is ugly as sin, I'd like to see a nake version like the Lightning which is a bike I've always liked, except for the P.O.S. 1957 tractor motor. Now that they have fixed that problem it's at least a possibility.

Now if the Harley stealerships would get their noses out of the air...

Yea no shit! I fucking like it but I will let you know if I would get one after I go to a HD stealership. They will probably refuse to sell them because of the new motor. America needs a competitive sportbike so I welcome this. I dont think the bandana heads will feel the same though. This has got to be part of HD/Buell wanting to be competitive in AMA road racing. We all know how that turned out (flat fucking embarrasing)! For us (USA) anyway.

Shame they aren't releasing new engine/chassis in the lightnings and ulysses, But I guess they want something new to release for '09 and '10. Say lightning in '09 and finally Ulysses in '10. Last buell to change would be the blast. Maybe chop a cylinder of the rotax mill and put it in a better looking chassis.

I still think the bike is ugly but after seeing it with a rider it seems to make some aerodynamic sense. From the top view it's wide at the front and tapers down towards the back, from the front view(with rider) it's wide where the rider's shoulders/elbows are and the radiator cowlings bow out where their knees normally stick out.

Hopefully they won't fuck-up on the price, it cuts off more potential customers for every $1,000 over $10,000. What held back the XB Buells was the motor and the fact that they cost too much for the amount of bike you get. Let's not make that mistake again, Mr Eric Buell.

matt, agree the power is close to what earlier ducs and the RC were putting out, but those were 5+ yo bikes, and had 125cc less. but a huge step in the right direction for Buell.

also not liking the looks, at least not initially. that super wide front makes sense (esp if you get caught in the rain with the mostly protected hands) but almost seems they went out of their way to accentuate the width, which i think is a mistake.

Yes, a 1957 tractor motor couldn't handle much, especially a track !

If it performs even close to the RC-51 on the track it has my respect. Still I'd be hesitant to compare the reliability with a Honda :P
