Yaa I'm still the same guy, and glad to see you are still around, too. But as far as this comment: "Doubt he much cares right now... I'm sure it's insured" You are underestimating us mens ability to care about innanimate objects! Thats always one of the first thing guys ask about both right after the accident, and right after they get put up in a not-so-comfy hospital bed and are drugged up.
I'm betting half his thoughts right now are on whether he should buy it back from the insurance company to make a track bike out of it, or on the always fun idea of what bike to buy next. DINO: heres a hint: it has the number 14 in it, and its so damn big and heavy you can cut through a whole herd of deer without even breaking that monster of a front fender. heh heh And they stop when you tell it too, without all that endo'ing fuss your 10 put up.

Sorry guys, didnt see this thread earlier, and online time has been limited and in high demand.
The dear did not make it out of the encounter alive. The dear hitting dino while he was in the stoppie was what sent him over the top.
Bike wasnt banged up too badly (compared to Dino at least) as it was a pretty low speed accident. Probably around 35. Woulda been no big deal had the bike not landed on Dino (we're assuming it did based on the injuries and the location of the bike). Deer whistlers wouldnt have helped i dont think, as we saw the dear a good 15s earlier, way down at the end of the straight. Stupid thing was halfway in the forest when it turned around and ran right back into Dino. I may have to start eating venison again...

What is a Dear Whistle? Does that keep the wife away?
But a deer whistle really does seem like a good idea, it sure as hell can't hurt. And despite what Freek said, it sounds like a whistle might have helped. I am taking off tomorrow for Laguna and we are taking 4 over Ebotts pass and meandering our way down there. The likelihood of coming across deer is pretty good. I think I need to pick up a whistle at lunch today.

Safe journey to all riders!! (cagers too)
Deer whistles, train horns, Harley pipes, whatever it takes, just get there safe.
We leave Friday am from So. Cal and trailering bikes. Not as much fun on the road, but we're towing our house, lol.
See you all at the races!!

Got a better idea than a deer whistle: Just carry a firearm on you. The damn deer will magically dissappear before you even come in sight of them.... works every goddamn time I go hunting!
Seriously though, I'll repeat what I've always said and done: Aim your bike where you think the deer is going to be when you get there. No shit, no BS, this is fact and I've had the very dubious honor of having proven my theory half a dozen times in the last couple years alone.
Think about it: First, deer are a highly predated species. They are genetically and mentally trained to avoid capture, to flee in ways that predators cannot predict. It's a automatic flight instinct that says "DO NOT run in a straight line, DO NOT go forward when spooked or scared- danger is always ahead, not behind" After eons of having wolves and lions hunting them they learned not to flee where you would expect them to. And if you think about all the stupid ass deer you've seen, hit, or nearly hit you will recognize what I'm talking about.
Trust me to understand exactly how terrifying it is to aim your 100+mph traveling bike directly at where that deer that just sprinted out of the woods will be when you arrive there in a split second, but I've done it and survived. Hell, that was the first time I put my theory to test and by far the most dangerous. I SO SO SO did not want to do what logic said not to, but sure enough he hesitated and just as I passed him he shot straight down the lane I was in. The area I would have tried to occupy if I aimed to go around him as he ran across the road. Talk about proof of concept.
So remember that fellas, it could very easily save your life some day. Sorry I didn't tell you that sooner Dino.

+1
I am in total agreement with Sticks. Just went through this a couple of months ago on Hwy 2. Bambi was running out in front of me. Trust me, I didn't think, no time. He came from the right side of the road, I gassed it hard and banked left. Even with the hard excel of the 14 I might have T-boned him, but he slid in his tracks and did a 180. Only bummer was, the wife was in that part of the lane. She hit the gas and squinted.... She made it by him too. We pulled over and shook it off.

I think it was Dino who once told me that deer whistlers on motorcycles dont work - because the 2 units need to be a certain distance away from each other and you can only do that on a car, not on a bike.

That doesn't seem to be the case with these.
Deer Warning Mounting Positions for Motorcycles
Mount the “Deer Warning” devices side by side on the front fender of your motorcycle. If the front fender is an unacceptable mounting location, find a mounting bracket that will allow you to mount them immediately above the front fender. The
“Deer Warning” will not be effective if they are mounted on the sides of the fairing or the sides of the front wheels. Any obstacles, such as the fairings or wheels, will make a shadow in the sound which is being produced by the “Deer Warning”
devices which reduces their effectiveness.

A horn might have helped- did you get yours fixed on your bike before the trip freek?
Or do you still think that it's something you don't really need to have working on your bike ?
