Props for Motorcyclist mag
This is from motorcyleusa.com's Best of 2005:
Best Print Pub: Motorcyclist
''While there are other magazines we enjoy more (Racer X, Roadracer X, Transworld MX), Motorcyclist deserves kudos for its 2005 research into helmet safety. Its industry-shaking two-part series boldly claimed that, in most crashes, an inexpensive DOT-approved lid was more effective at reducing head injuries than a stiffer Snell-endorsed product that costs several times as much. As a result, some major name brands pulled their advertising. Intrepid reporting such as this has been lacking from the major glossies, so we're happy to finally see one of them not afraid to upset the apple cart."

Yup, agreed, their stock went up 200% in my book on account of that. I haven't found much else of use in their mag besides entertainment value, but that was a ballsy and important story showing real integrity on their part -- and a real LACK of integrity on Arai's part given their punitive response, btw. Motorcyclist earned somewhat of a fan in me on account of their integrity with this story.

Hey trenace
I read that story as well and I 100% agree with you, it is about time someone had the balls to as you say " upset the apple cart " I do not think thier can be enough RND into helmet technology. I am in Canada and here the entire country is mandatory for helmets. It just is not a topic you here about up here, you just have to wear one. Are there still places in the US that do not have helmet laws.

Yes.
A few states in the US still don't have helmet laws.

Yup, no helmet laws in Florida for example. (Or rather there are, but with most not required to wear them, though I'm pretty sure minors have to wear a helmet.)
It's not a question of not having the law "yet" but rather of it having been repealed.
Sporbike riders, maybe 1/2 wear helmets. H-D riders, maybe 1/10th.
Stupid.
The heat in the summer does make it tempting to do without, but only newbie ignorance or just being a total fool could justify expecting to go years of riding without a helmet and getting away with it forever. That's my take on it anyway.

I am 34 and have been riding for about 18 years and I have never even thought about not wearing one. Even the thought of an open face helmet scares me, a bird or big frickin June bug in the face at 140 is not my idea of fun.

sure there's a helmet law in all states, but it is more commonly referred to as Darwin's Law.

Interesting about cheaper helmets working as well. I kind of suspected as much with patents running out and typical diminishing returns after years of research, but gutsy for a magazine to do an honest test.
Yeah, helmet laws are getting repealed every couple years here in the U.S. My state, Pennsylvania, recently repealed their's a few years ago. Although I haven't personally ridden without one yet, I think it's good. I'm all for choice, and since I believe states without helmet laws don't seem to run higher medical bills as a direct result, then let people do what they want. Granted medical bills aren't higher because more often the person simply dies, but that's their choice. Darwin, like the frEEk said.
Seems a state-sponsered MSF course being available saves more money to the taxpayers than helmet laws. Helps prevent the accident in the first place.

I'd love to see the helmet law pass in illinois. all the chicago harly homos would stop riding since helmets arn't cool. also the posers sport riders would have to stop riding around with there helmets hanging off of there passengers seats.

Just heard on the radio on Friday morning on the way to the office. some lady got a 650 dollar fine for driving to fast past a stopped cop car with his lights on. this new law got started this year, and you have to slow down to 60klm for all stopped emergency vehicals with their lights on when you pass them. they are pretty tuff hear for speeding laws so the thought on not wearing a helmet is the least of my worries.
