This is just an opinion but I'd recommend going to the 636 first.

new 05/06 636's are a helluva lot better than the 03/04 636's in my opinion. get the newer 636's and ride that for a season or two. with ur weight, the 636 will be fine. great bike, every bit as fast with minimal difference than the 10r, especially under 130mph. after that, the 10r will pull with a faster rate of acceleration, but the 636 is the easier bike.

I have both, and the '05 636 feels like it steers heavier (more trail) than the '04-05 10R, and has a different riding position, though I can't say what the difference there is.
I feel like I corner better on the 10R.
I also don't think the jump from EX500 to 10R is a wise move.

I think it's financially a wise move going from a 500 to a 10!!!
If you have a good head on your shoulders and respect the power of the 10 compared to your riding ability and experience then you will be fine!!!...Just dont ride over your head!!!
I say get the 10!!!

Go for that 636. It'll stil be a big step from the 500 and at your age your insurance payment would probably be more than your bike payment on a 10.

If you have never driven through a headshake or wheelied through a wobble, buy the 636. The 10 is not a patient teacher

you could get killed on a 10 and you could get killed on a 636 , just ride like you got some since , it seems like one rider goes down every week here in atl. but you can never loose with a 10spot though!

If you want to live to see 21 you're best advise will be the 636. Throwing caution to the wind isn't wise and advising one to do such isn't very responsable either. Death is a forever kind of thing. A bigger and faster motorcycle will always be there when you're ready.

500 to a 10R = Dead quicker than shit.
Don't believe me? Get one.
I'd suggest the 636 with some 10R stickers maybe.... the girls will never know.

If you can afford the insurance, get the 10r. Don't listen to these sissies. Holy shit does that thing have a hit. I keep looking down to make certain it's still under me and didn't shoot off by itself. Man what a thrill. 636 is cute but like I said, if you got the $, get the 10r.

friggen heck! 10r no doubt. you can't use the 'have you ever ridden through a head shake' line cos if he gets the 6 that won't teach him crap about head shake. you gotta confront the issue once and for all. get a 10... BUT only if you have a good head on your shoulders as was said earlier. you can learn to handle the power but if you don't have the power to start with... you're screwed cos you'll have to upgrade soon.
use it, don't use it...

How many years have you been riding...and how many miles have you done on the street? The 10r only goes as fast as you make it...but newbs are known for getting off balance and twisting the throttle wide open on accident. Do that on a 10r, and you'll be doing backflips down the street.

I say go for a 636. The 6 is not slow by any means and you will learn more riding it than the 10. You have PLENTY of time to move up to a faster bike. My fourth bike was a Ducati 900SS. A 636 puts out at least 25 hp more than the Super Sport and the Duck had plenty of power for me. I rode dirt bikes before street bikes and rode on the street for 9 years before I got a bike close to as fast as a ZX10R. You've got to ask yourself why you want a 10. Do you want it for the ego boost or are you that skilled of a rider that can respectfully ride the bike?

I went from a 97 Honda VFR 750 to the 10r. I had been riding for about a year and put on 20k to the VFR. At the time I didnt realize what I was getting in to. But 4 months later, i'm still kicking and havent put it down. Its all up to the rider. I learned my original EX500 very quickly and moved up to the VFR. Man what a difference! That thing was SO fast compared to the EX500. If you dont plan on getting much track time get the 636. The ZX10 is almost too fast for the street. Vibrates like hell below 40mph, and is actually difficult to keep it below that.
Your big concern should be are you skilled enough for it. Like others have said, you have alot more power underneath you. A mistake that would be forgiven on a 600 might prove fatal on a literbike. An example of this is I had just gotten the bike and was merging on the highway. Had the girlfriend on the back. I give it a little go to get into traffic and all of a sudden i'm looking straight at the tank. I slam the throttle shut and come down hard. Checking to see if the girlfriend was still there. She was and she actually had a good time (she loves thrills). But in short, I never would have dreamed a bike could do that and its unitentional mistakes that will hurt. Buy with caution and respect what you buy.
