Running Cooler...

Okay, my zx10r runs hot as hell...What are the different things I can do to run cooler without sacrificing any power or ridability. I hear something about KLEEN air system removel or redirection? And I hear something about water-wetter in the coolant and changing it out with something else, or adding water, or something? Anyone who know please let me know all the ways I can run cooler? Right now I run at 220-230 easily in the Texas heat.

Ike,

On the ZX12 I run a 70/30 mix of water/anti-freeze with 1/2 bottle of water wetter. I also have the Muzzy fan which blows more air than the OEM. I think the Muzzy has 5/6 blades compared to the 4/5 of the OEM.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Red

Water and a few capfuls of Water Wetter (for the summer only if it ever freezes where you're at). The anti-freeze bottle will tell you what minimum % is required to get the freeze protection you need in the winter.

With the heat at 100 degrees and the humidity at 80% or whatever it is here, it iain't easy keeping them temp cooler, it also takes like 3 or 4 yanks to start the bike since it is so humid and muggy. Right now I have the factory 50/50 coolant I think. So would adding some watter wetter help out? Also if it freezes, is watter wetter have any neg side effects?

Swft,

I can see over 225 deg in the canyons when moving at up to 80 MPH, and 208-215 on the freeway, when the ambient is over 110.

Watter wetter helps, as all have said.

At a track day with a 100 air temp and probably 130+ track temp, My 10 runs at 200 with the 50/50 coolant/distilled water mix. No water wetter or any other additives. That is the hottest it ever gets when I am moving.

Yeah when I am on a run or track persay I run around 205 or less but in city riding it gets up to 230 and even up to 250 sometimes...By the way I checked the news...overhear is is around 96-100 degree with 95% and higher humidity...not sure if that is bad but someone told me 80% was bad so I would think 95-100% is worse? anyway signing off from Austin, TX AKA HOE (Hell on Earth) When the news came on they show the high and low from previous years in 2003 it was 110 degrees with 95% humidity on this date.

I know humidity. The good days are 80%. 90+ is pretty normal. 100% is pretty common. BTW. I am about 200 miles south of Austin. On public roads, my temps usually are 180 or less, unless I get stuck in traffic.

My neighbor is from Austin. She thinks it is "heaven on earth".

I use Engine Ice and the bike seems to run 15 degrees cooler I live in So Cal and it gets pretty hot here and it never gets cold enough in my garage to worry about winter freeze.

Don't fall for the Engine Ice hype (and extreme cost).

Distilled water, 1/2 bottle of Water Wetter ($7) and 1 cup of glycol anti-freeze.

It will cure what ails ya. ;-)

If you live in the cold belt, change it out with a 50/50 antifreeze mix before the cold stuff hits.

I think engine ice is a waste of money. I put it in my 954 and when I ran it with a friend's 954. They both ran about the same temperature. Mine might have ran 1 or 2 degrees lower but not enough to make it worth the cost. One good thing about the ZX10's they run a lot cooler than the CBR 954.

my buddy and myself ran together right with each other and my 10r ran hotter than the 954 pretty much the whole time...he had a 02 954 which has the smaller fan i blieve...my 10r runs hot as shit for some reason, i have no idea why? I hate it, but have to deal with it...no leaks or anything, maybe my coolant is a little low, i will add some water and water wetter...Is water wetter okay to add to just the stock 50/50 mixture which comes in the bike when it is new? So can I just poor like a 1/4 cup of water wetter?

No, the two purposes of Water Wetter are:

1) Mainly to allow running more distilled water -- if you just run more water without using Water Wetter you won't be compensating for the loss in anti-corrosion additives from using less antifreeze. Water is a more effective coolant than is antifreeze (ethylene or propylene glycol) so the higher percentage water, the better the cooling.

2) It enhances the cooling ability of water a little probably by improving contact of the water with the metal and minimizing local formation of steam pockets which would tend to block heat transfer, if I understand that correctly.

But the main benefit is being able to run more water.

Continuing to run 50/50 would miss out on the major benefit and I doubt you would see anything too noticeable if at all.
