FI light, erratic temps, backfiring...

Sound like anything specific? FI light started to go on and off intermittantly, then on the way home tonight the temps started jumping around from 190 to 210 (the instant I'd stop the temp would rise about 1 degree every 2 seconds) and I noticed an occasional extra pop or two coming outta the pipe. Still ran like a scalded dog, just not behaving like it's usal self.... and the FI light bothers the hell out of me.

There is a proper amount of coolant and oil in it. The Cali emissions have been mussed with by the previous owner but haven't caused any problems as far as I know. Put an Area P on it 3 days ago.

Any ideas?

Might need to look at what, if anything, you did to the exhaust valve.

Actually I never touched the exhaust valve.

I looked at my coolant resevoir this morning and it's bone dry. Yesterday it was at the full mark. I'm wondering if the FI light is a low coolant indication or something like that. The wild temp fluctuation was possibly an indication of air pockets running through the system. That's my guess right now.

I'm gonna look into it tomorrow and see what I can find.

Temp sensor won't read air - better get that thing looked at, aluminum doesn't like over-heating much.

I called Kawi and they said it sounded like a low coolant issue. I was going to dump the coolant and go with water and Royal Purple Ice anyway, so I guess now's the time to try it.

Anybody know if theres a service manual download for the 10R like there used to be for the 12R?

If it's a leak, let Kawi do it under warranty.

Why spend the money if they're just gonna hafta re-do everything to fix a leak???

Just a thoght.

Makes sense to let the dealer take a look if it's under warranty. Losing that much coolant so quickly, you've got another problem. If the bike was brand new and/or the coolant had just been changed, then it's possible the system just wasn't bled correctly. It sounds like this isn't the case. So it may be leaking/steaming out somewhere else. Just let the dealer do a pressure test to give you peace of mind and find out exactly where the coolant is going.
That's cheap insurance.

New info:

Bike starts cold fine - no trouble.

If I stop it and restart, the FI light comes on and the temp rockets skyward.

Any suggestions?
