Rode my 12 today to compare it...
Rode my 12 today to see how it compares to the 10. Having ridden my 10 for the last month and having almost 3000 miles on it, I thought it was time to see how they compared.
The first thing you notice when you take the 12 off the stand and push it out is that there is a very large difference in the weight. Then the next thing you notice it when you sit on it, the thing feels huge. Once you get rolling you notice you can see out the mirrors (what a concept) although they are very high up. Then you notice the transmission shifts far smoother than the 10. But the clutch is cranky and it engages way at the end of the lever travel. Now moving down the road you realize how nice the clock and fuel gage is. I miss them . Seating position for me is much more comfortable on the 10. I feel stretched out and awkward on the 12. As for the power, the 12 has a much nicer power band, comes on lower and pulls so nicely through the range. I noticed that the 12 is geared much lower in first and second making it much easier to wheelie at lower speed. Also the engine is much smoother in most places and there is almost no vibration in the bars. But in the 10s defense, I think that the taller first makes it easier to ride fast and it wheelies nicely at 70-80 which is a good exit speed from the corners on many of the roads around here. And I don't need to say that the 10 is obscenely easy to ride. Now as for which one is quicker, It is close but I would have to give the nod to the 10. You have to rev up the 10, but the close ratio tranny makes it easy to ride fast. A very different pair of bikes.

prolyl the most detailed comparison i've read. i'm surprised u found the 12's engine to be smoother in most places. i assume u'r not talking about the smoothness of the FI? also funny to think of the 12 as having a lower first gear as it was rediculously high when it came out.

Like I said it is mostly noticeable in the bars. But the pegs are also smoother. The tank and seat will buzz you on the 12 but it will smooth out. My 10 has a smooth spot at 5500, but it is changing as I break it in. Corbin seats are junk, I forgot how hard that piece of crap is. My 12s FI is dead on.

what year 12? even the somewhat improved 02/03 model was rather abrupt FI as far as i've heard, and i know my 00 is almost dangerous at time. keeping a smooth wheelie on that thing is damn near impossible since it's always abig hit on or a hard chop off.

Mine is a 00. The 12 slams the ground hard, but I think that is due to the weight.

Nice comparo Ted, Which one is quicker/faster?? based on the many, many 10r owners on the zx-10r site that have encountered both the 12 & Busa's i'll say confidently the 10r in comparatively stock or modded form that is.

Well my 12 is faster for sure, faster meaning top speed. But quicker, I would say the 12 is easier to launch, just because of the weight holding the front wheel down. But the gearing of the 10 takes over with its taller upper limit of 1st and 2nd. third seems to top out the same, and fourth is a bit lower than the 12 and so on. There are a couple of spots I would hit the rev limiter in second on the 12 and now hit them sooner on the 10. So it seems like the 10 is quicker. But I will say that those places involved me coming out of a corner and with the 10 corner speeds are higher.

The 10 in stock form will run a true 186mph so whatever a 12 may have above that will take it forever to catch up so yea for all out top end speed the 12 may have 2mph but thats it. If you had some time during a weekday to head out pyramid hwy about 10miles we could find out..:-)

That would be fun. I would love to find out just what the difference is. I think the 12 would surprise you, especially after 3rd.

actually the 10 will be the surprise as it will be leading :-) the 12 will have 3-4 bike lengths to make up...........no BS. You should be glad to know this since you've finally made a modern day bike purchase.

I agree the 'feeling' from the 10 isn't overly impressive but it truely is pullin. A few of my buddies that i had a 3 day ride with about 10 days ago summed it up just that way......'it doesn't feel like its pullin but obviously it is'. Another aspect related to the diff between these two bikes is the RPM ceiling, the 10 redlines 12.5ish and the 12 about 10.5ish (advantage 10)

I like the 10 better, but I still feel my old 12 pulled harder than my 10. The redline on the 12 is not much lower than the 10 if I recall correctly. It is higher than 10.5.

I guess i should have been more precise with the RPM ceiling, sorry. It seems the 12 redlines at/near 11.5k while the 10 is 13k. Torque and displacement are to the 12 as lighter weight is to the 10.

Either way its always fun and informative. What time ya off next Monday?? maybe a 7pm run out pyramid? lite traffic and plenty of visability.
