won't shift into first
I cannot get my bike to shift into first. Also it will not shift passed 2nd gear. I am trying this in the garage and and rocking the bike back and forth with it running. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas. I just put on a new rear set cause mine was broken. It is a stock rear set. Also I tried changeing the postion of the shift lever...it didn't help.
please help

did you get the lever on the splined shaft on in the exact same spot ?
when you broke the old rearset could you have damaged the gearshift mechanism ?

You should be able to shift it into first with the engine off and just rocking it back and forth. It won't go into second unless you are moving forward.

Did it shift before you replaced the footrest stay and how did it get broken in the first place?
FYI
Your ZX10 has a positive neutral finder and will NOT shift into 2nd unless the rear wheel is spinning at a certain speed.
The positive neutral finder consists of 3.... 5/32" steel balls that reside half way inside 3 seperate channels cut into the Output shaft (theses channels are only long enough to allow 5th to engage 1st while at rest), and halfway inside of 3 holes drilled into 5th gear, "AT REST", these balls stop 5th gear from sliding which must slide for second gear engagement (other gears are being moved at the same time, 5th gear DOES NOT engage 2nd....sequential gearbox dont ya know).Once enough centrifugal force is exherted the balls move outward in the drilled holes releasing 5th gear, making it free to slide on the shaft.
Hopefully you understand what I just said.....I tried to make it as simple as possible but with a full explanation.

Kawasaki's only shift first and neutral when stopped.
You've got to be moving or the engine must be running to shift second and up.

make sure that the part with the splines that slips over the shaft itself is on correct,, the shift rod when correct (isw above the shaft,,if it is flipped (under the shaft,,you will have problems,,it happened to me) hope this helped
