Opened up exhaust....Uh oh!!!

Since my exhaust can is trashed and I had it off the bike anyway, I removed the cat and drilled many 1/2 inch holes in the baffle plate. Late last night I finally got around to starting the bike to blow out the pieces and was greeted with a nasty, tinny sound. But even worse, it has a big hesitation off idle when revving the motor. And that's not even under load. I've never heard this mentioned on any other thread about opening up the stock exhaust. My question is: Am I risking a really lean engine at the track this weekend? I'm almost ready to plug the baffle plate back up.

I drilled 3 1" holes in the baffle plate and made a 2" hole down the center of the cat. Sounds great, works better.

OK, was just out in the garage testing further. After letting it warm up for a while, the hesitation wasn't near as bad as last night. The tinny sound wasn't as bad either. (I wonder if revving the bike next to the compound miter saw set the saw blade a ringin'). Anyway, went for a short ride down the block after adjusting the idle up and the hestitation was very minor. My idle was pretty low to start with. Since the bike is set up for the track (ie. street illegel) I can't really test much more until I get to Grattan tomorrow. I hope this was all a false alarm. I'd feel stupid but at least we would know.

I gutted my converter but left the baffle alone and it works awesome no hesitation whatsoever.Sounds about the same just a little deeper when you romp down on it.

COuld it be the bike wasnt at operating temp?
I couldnt see how freeing up the exhaust would cause a stumble unless you disconnect the flapper valve.

Maybe the flapper valve isn't operational until the bike hits operating temp? Sorta an 'open loop' thing?

Is that what your race team mechanic told you to say swft?
And swft tell your mechanic it's called a exhaust valve not a flapper. LOL,
the flapper is the thing between your nose and your chin.

Nope...not at all. Do the math ... 2800 posts divided by 4+ years. What's that like 2 posts a day?

Well I just returned from the track. It appears I cried wolf. The exhaust was a total non-issue. Didn't seem to help nor hinder the bike. Of course, at the track I don't spend any time off idle. I think I was just having a stupid fit because it was late at night and I was thrashing on the bike. Sorry for any worry I may have caused fellers.

I drilled several 1/2 inch holes and then made them larger with horeshoe stake. ZX-10R does not seem weaker anywhere in powerband or any problems whatsoever.

sounds much better than stock to my taste. BTW 4+ hp been reported with just two one inch holes thru Blocking plate.

Hopfully I did better;at least theoretically it makes sense to me.

Just removing Cat is not enough for significant gains I think..

Three things about this thread:

Setting the idle low is for Harleys, not track bikes.

On-off throttle is very important and already sucks on this bike (abrupt) if the mod makes it worse (it might) that IS significant.

"Pulling from down low" is definitely not an issue at the track. If you think it is you geared wrong.
