Uh-oh!! This is where someone says that if you don't spend a bazillion dollars on a helmet then you must want your head to be split like a melon.

I'm not really into the whole price thing, I get whatever fits my head the best and offers the most protection. It just so happens that it's an Arai. Get whichever helmet feels the most comfortable, because it doesn't matter how much it costs if it isn't comfortable. IMHO.

I have had both Shoei and Arai and I feel the Arai is a better helmet. It has a great fit and simple sheild system.

RX7RR4, saved me in a 120mph crash, replaced it with the same model. Okay I'll say it, how much is your head worth?

Arai RX-7 Corsair is the best and lightest helmet out. Shoei X-Eleven is nice too. I recommend trying both of them on and seeing which one fits your skull better, because they do fit a little different.

Just like others are saying, try on the Shoei and the Arai. They will fit differently, I have owned both and also a Suomy, all are nice, but the Shoei and Arai (depending on model), are a step above.

I didn't believe it either but I have a KBC, HJC,nolan, shoei, and tried on an Arai xd and had to order one fits a 1000 times better,more comfortable and lighter. Arai all the way!

I have Shoei, they fit my melon nicely, been wearing an X-9 for a while, just picked up an X-11 last year smokin' helmet best I've worn, and I picked up an RF-1000 this winter, real close to the X-11 although the X-11 fits better and cools a lot better too. I have yet to purchase an Arai, I'll have to look at them though. I look at what a lot fo the racers wear, they have a higher chance of crashing as they are on the edge a lot more often even though they are on the track and it is a more controlled environment there is still this thing called and accident and another called loss of control.

No matter which helmet you buy, correct fit is VITAL. Most people do not buy the correct size when they get a new helmet. One rule of thumb, if you can put it on and take it off easily, it is probably too large. If the helmet is not a tight enough fit then it cannot disapate the energy from an impact properly. The best helmet in the world will not do it's job properly if the fit is not correct.

Arai has different lines for different head shapes. This is from their website...
The Astral introduces Arai's new "Intermediate Oval" shell shape. It bridges the fit gap between the Round Oval shape of the RX-7 and Quantum series, and the Long Oval shape of the Signet GT, Tracker GT and Renegade. The Astral is designed for riders who need a longer interior shape (front-to-back) than is common with the Round Oval fit, but who also need more interior width (side-to-side) than the Long Oval's distinctly narrow interior.
Even though most brands don't have specific lines for different head shapes, you'll find that the various models of many of the manufacturers will not fit the same. I love my Quantum, but did not like the RX-7 even though they claim to fit the same head shape. Features like reduced wind noise, good ventilation and light weight are good (the more you spend, the better these features get), but the fit is by far and away the most important aspect.
You can be posing with the latest high dollar replica helmet, but if it doesn't fit properly, you could possibly suffer greater injury in an crash then you would have in a less expensive model or brand that did fit properly. "Comfort" does fit into the "safety equation" as well. If after a long period of time, the helmet put an uncomfortable amount of pressure on your forehead, it can actually interfere with your ability to concentrate.

BMW is advertising "The worlds lightest helmet." Carbon fiber. Their ads say check their 2004 Rider Equipment Catalog. Don't have any other contact info.

Also dont forget that the helmet will brake in . It should fit very tight at first (almost to thight) after a month or so of wear it will get broke in! Nice thing about Arai is they have diffrent size cheek pads you can change as the helmet wears.

Suomy SPEC 1R is the finest helmet out there . Suomy's are handmade in Italy . The SPEC 1R is the lightest helmet on the market compared to ALL others . Check them out for yourself . I mean go to the dealership and actually try one on and compare the weights ect .... I did
I have a (Shoei X-11 super heavy) and Arai's RX7RR4 . Both are a LOT heavier and have terrible wind buffeting at speeds over 60MPH . Arai not so much as the Shoei though .
The Arai fits good . But the Suomy fits like a glove , mo betta . I give the fitment edge to the Suomy . It has a softer interior liner . Better cheak pads too . reilly809 , the Suomy also has changeable cheek pads
The graphics are a lot smoother and have a high polish on the Suomy . Again the Suomy trumps the Arai here .
Tried a friends HJC and another buddies KBC , uh ....... not for me . That means I have ridden with both . I developed a headache after 15 minutes with the HJC . And the size was ok for me . Nowhere near the same level of protection and fitment as the much higher quality helmets out there .
My "own" ranking of lids are as follows :
1. Suomy
2. Arai
3. Shark
4. AGV
5. Shoei
6. all the others

I crash-tested my well-fitting HJC AC-10...it worked...bought another one...for the price/features its a good helmet...I also have a Duhamel RF900...looking to buy a metallic-black RF1000 to match something I want to ride very, very much.... 
Both HJC and Shoie fit my round-ish mellon well...hence, my preference...

Fit is the most critical. I personally swear by Suomy. I have worn their stuff since it began coming to the states for the simple reason it fits me better than anything else on the market. The spec-1r is extremely light and ventilates well, the new extreme is even better. Graphics are very good quality too. I would suggest getting a helmet with a removable liner too so that you can wash the stink out after a long hard ride. There is nothing worse than putting on your helmet after it has sat for a couple of days growing things!

AGV Ti-tech fits me well. XR-2 is also good, but in my opinion the Ti-tech is somewhat more stable at high speeds.
The most important thing is the fit of the helmet. Helmets from different manufacturers and different models have unique shapes. For example I haven't found a single Shoei or Suomy helmet that fits me as well as the AGV.
Just go to the dealership and test every helmet you find (test drive if possible). Find the one that fits the best (but remember, a new helmet needs to be SMALL).
