effectiveness of an aftermarket exhaust

Hey everyone, i have a quick couple of questions on exhausts and power commanders (i know this subject has been beat to death but bare with me). My buddy has a 2001 zx12r he has installed a akra full exhaust and pcIII, he said it was night and day the difference. His bike also had a catalitic converter in the muffler which was removed by the full exhaust....so my questions are...for those who have done full exhaust and pcIII, slip-on and PCIII or just a PCIII

-was there any huge difference and what did you put on full or slip-on
-did the bikes torque curve change, whether it moved the torque up on down in the rpm range
-driveability, any difference
-any benefit from just a pcIII install
-stock or aftermarket air filter - i read multiple times that stock is perfect

I have done a ton of research like all of you but have not seen or heard anyone say it is a total difference from stock to a slip-on or to full system....or just a pcIII...bike might be too new but we have a lot of informed and knowledgeable people here so i thought i would ask... thanks,

Mavrik

Good questions. More and more results/findings are being examined as ZX-10R still new bike on the streets. Inquiry minds want to know....

Thanks for questions.

aaah there are a lot more people who know more than me but what the heck, ill throw in my two cents...

regarding the air filters, stock ones is all u need. the k&n i hear actually dont work as good compared to the stock, while the bmc air filters do work better, but allow too much stuff to get through since they are opened up too much....so that said, my advice is to leave the stock air filters on...

as far as the whole pipe and dynojet setup...a full will make a bigger difference compared to a slip on, and not just in performance but in weight also...the dynojet will improve the way the bike runs all along the curve...

imo, its not just about top numbers, but how does the bike perform all the way through the gears and how does the curve improve or flow smoother/better...

another benefit of the power commander is if u do more upgrades internally above and beyond the exhaust, you can remap things accordingly because all those things make a factor in it...

and i know u can download and find a map for a power commander nearly anywhere on just about any particular configuration, but doing a dyno run will allow u to get a custom map made just for ur bike. downside is u have to drop another 75-100 bucks if u make anymore mods to do it again, and of course dynoing is hella hard on the bike.

again, thats just my .02 so i dunno if that helps any or at all

Typically, a full system with a good PC tune will yield 10-12 rwhp over stock. In most cases, the entire torque curve is raised, resulting in better mid range and part throttle performance. In addition, most aftermarket systems save a few pounds of ugly fat.

From the results posted for the 10R so far, it appears that a slip on is worth 5-7 rwhp, making it a better cost/power deal than the full system. I'm going with a full system just because I want to get rid of that exhaust valve, the one that looks like it came from a plumbing supply house.

"wow" seems to be a unit of measure that varies from person to person. some people say 5 horses extra is no big deal, others talk about night and day.

as to the 10, i wouldnt expect as large gains from a full system as with past models like the 12, because it seems they did a real good job with the headers on the 10. also, u wont save as much weight as usual since the stock headers are TI if i am not mistaken.

It may be hype, but Akro's website shows an 11 RWHP gain on the 10R. Between the muffler and exhaust valve, there should be a 4-5 lb. weight reduction; the headers and collector are probably no lighter on aftermarket systems.

I think you have to buy another part that you have to connect to pcIII for timing.

Fellas, the only full system that I know of if the akro, it's only a 1lb or 2 varing from the evo to the race stainless. The gain that was mentioned earlier is at peak. If you actually follow the curve you will notice that it's only a 1 or 2 hp gain throughout the rev band, and reaching it's highest gain at the rev limit.(11hp). Is that truly worth the 1200.00 bucks? In my opinion, I don't think so. You cash do with it what you will. I think there is a gain in the pc3, just to lean out the mix on the top and maybe gain a few or even just to clean up your stock mapping..... I haven't picked mine up yet(24 jun) so what do I know....., but. I have actually spoken with the right people!

Actually, the Akro Evo 1 is $1700+. Give credit where credit is due.

What frEEK said;also may consider the DKET mod which is virtually free;being the skeptical I will see for myself if you don't mind person I am; I will wait to read the fine print on my 5 year warranty contract before I make up my mind and proceed with it... but MR. DKET got bit over 4hp peak increase modifying stock can.

Jury is busy; but stay tuned for the verdict as many will report; thats the beauty of being alive in the "information age" that we live in.

Something to consider into your research I think.$$$ ??.

Peace and freedom.

I can say that the 3hp freed up on my bike by the Jardine bolt-on alone was slightly noticeable - it doesn't take ya by storm but ya realize that the bike seems ta do things a lil easier.
