The gasket stayed on the bike when I changed mine. Get contact (or brake) cleaner and tinfoil, use the tinfoil to direct most of the oil from the filter into the drainpan. The remainder that spills onto the headers you'll clean with contact cleaner.
I'm using the Kawachem non-synthetic oil until I get 1800 miles on the bike, then switch to synthetic, most likely Mobil-1.

Same here. I didn't have an oil filter wrench so I couldn't verify the torque on the filter. Went ahead and put a hose clamp on the filter and safety wired it so that I knew it wouldn't back off.

Another possibility is to use a large clear plastic bag, and unscrew the filter into the bag. Then just dump the contents of the bag into the pan. Not home right now to look and see if that will work well. Even with that, the tin foil would still be necessary to shield the warm headers. I haven't changed mine yet, but normally the "gasket" is actually an aluminum or other soft metal crush washer. They can usually be reused several times. I am planning to use a non-syn. for the first change, then go to syn. at 1500 miles.
