Warning Watch your oil filter
Saturday night I had one of the scariest rides of my life.
My air shifter would not shift into 2nd, so on the return road I tried it again. I left about 3000rpm and then when to shift the bike didn't shift then all hell broke lose. I have a Scotts oil filter on the bike and like all my oil filters I only hand tighten them. Well with Mobil 1 in my bike and the ZX12 reving about 7000 rpm it did not take long to cover every thing from the oil filter back, including the rear slick. The bike went side ways Left to Right about 3 feet enough to make me think about getting off. About this time it hit me that I had a flat tire so I grab the front brake and stop the bike. As I look down to see that every thing is covered in oil, so I quickly shut off the motor. Well tonight I took all plastic off and grab the oil filter and it was lose, very lose. So I called Scotts and asked them about it and they told me that there is a strap wrench that comes with the filter, which I did not get. So there sending me one out tonight.
In closing Please check your oil filter to make sure its tight...Very tight....
Also I would like to say that the Scotts oil filter is a great product and it was not the blame for the problem. Me not getting the strap tool and the instructions was the problem.

Why would not just use a $7 factory oil filter?

Or you could put a hose clamp around the filter when you install it and safety wire it to the drain plug.

The reason I wanted this filter is so I could watch for metal shavings in the motor. You have to take it apart to clean it and you can see whats happing in the motor every time you change the oil. I plan on doing the hose clamp trick this time.
I called Scotts and they said that the extra weight of the filter has somthing to do with it coming off when only hand tight..

How many pieces is the Scotts filter? Is there any paper or fabric media or is it all metal construction?

You could simply cut open the stocker when you change it

hacksaw? sawzall? jigsaw? Tinsnips? Heck id bet you could even use an old style manual canopener to cut the top off...and then remove the filter elements. (never tried that but it seemed logical enough)

John's came loose ON THE DYNO!!! after HE cahanged his oil!?!?!?
UN-REAL mess on the dyno and...I believe that if it was NOT synthetic oil??? we would have had a BAD fire in the dyno-room!!!
Smked-up so bad/quick that...my arms and the ENTIRE BIKE dis-appeared "in front of my eyes"...
I'd rather cuss...trying to get an over-tight one off then...EVER have THAT happen again

If you want to cut open your oil filter use a pipe cutter.
I will always tighten my oil filter with a wrench and safety wire it. Those that don't may be in for a rude awakening someday.

Yup, this way you won't mistake saw dust for motor parts...

The Scotts filter is all of 3 pcs, the out side housing the inter filter , which is metal mesh and a spring clip and thats it.
It takes me about 1 minute to open my filter and check it out and about 5 minutes to clean it.
As for the cost of this filter is about $100.00 if I remember right. A stock filter runs about $7.00 X 10 oil changes = $70.00 you have almost bought this filter. I have read that some of you guys change your oil after every race weekend. So in 3 months or 12 weeks of racing you just paid for this filter.
Some of you guys have spent big money on your engines and have had problems. With this filter you would have know about problems way early by reading the stuff thats inside the filter. And be honest how many of you guys really split your filter every time??? I have to so that I know that its clean and fresh for the new oil...
Billet crank $3200.00 a set of carrillo rods $800.00 and a 1270 kit $1300.00
Muzzy exhaust $700.00... one damn nice oil filter $100.00 it not that bad of a price for what you get.... Just think about it....
