ZX12R LOCKUP QUESTION
For those of you with a lockup style clutch in your Busa I have a couple questions for you. What is your rpm while waiting on the lights? From there do you PIN the throttle or do you roll on?...Thanks...Chris

With a lockup, basically once you start rolling...the clutch "locks" up. You will have to adjust your launch for this because if you dont get the bike moving you'll either smoke the tire bad or bog it. You can tune most lock ups with the weights on the outside of the setup. (usually a bolt/nut combo)
Ive ridden a few busas with lockups. I left at 3500rpm or so. I revved the bike and let the clutch fly. Bogged alittle on a few lauches. Im guessing the bigger motor you have, the less rpm needed to leave.

I know I need a lighter base pressure. The first movement the bike makes is UP. At this point counterweights or fingers really arent even coming into play yet. Is this right?

You can tune a lockup to hit the tire softer just throw it away, got to set it up right..... Lockup multistage setup perfect will allow you to throw it away everytime from a predetermined RPM and get bad ass 60 fts 60 inchers go 1.4s with lockups

Red..Thanks for the input but thats why i bought it Similar to the clutch we used in our drag car. My question has been has anyone actually set one up? From what im learning I must have the very first one. On a stock engined bike that is.

I have an MRE 2-stage lockup in my ZRX. It took me awhile to get it close to where I like it - no matter how light I first set the static spring pressure, it would still grab too hard at the hit. One trick that helped A LOT was to stack half my plates 'goofy' or back-to-back. So starting from the bottom of the hub, I stack the fibers (F) and steels (S);
FSFSFSFSSFFSSFFSF
And this gives me less surface area to grab, letting it slide for 15-20 feet or so until the arms start to clamp down on the pack. I run 4 arms with aluminum 12/24 bolts, and 2 arms naked. I run all stock OEM springs, the most tired ones I can find. I can almost through the clutch away at 4500 with this setup and roll into WOT by the top of first, on a good pass anyway.
I'm sure every bike and rider is different, but if you are running as light a spring as you can find, and still don't have enough slip, try stacking your plates goofy and see what happens.

Multi stages are also much more tunable than 2 stage. Each arm equals some pressure as rpm increases....I would set it up with soft springs, and the 12 clutch spins anyway with the stockers, so I would try and launch at 7K or so once you get it setup right. Coby and Chip have their 60 inch moving with MTC multi so can YOU all it takes is Rand D time...
also you gearing and arm length will affect wheelies and such. You need to have it launch past the toqrue peak of the motor so it wont try and come up on you. The thing needs to be spinning as you let it go and grab once its past the torque peak....
Dean you have a 4 inch arm right?

It's a 6-over, about 64". I talked to Tony Lang this weekend and he can put together a multi-stage for my bike, but I will need to swap out the input shaft. Maybe next winter.

Multistage MTC
I figured there was alot more Busa guys running one so thats why the post is named this..My bike is a 12r.
Dean...your idea of the weird stacking?...ive considered doing that honestly just wasnt sure of what the outcome would be. Im pretty sure the problem I have is to high of staic pressure..zx12 stock springs..launches at 4k..bogs then big wheelies. I have springs in the bike now that have less pressure and the bike no longer bogs then wheelies..goes straight into a wheelie. 3ft and climbs.
Ive tried one launch at 5500. Spun tire hard right off the line (6 over arm, mc2, 16-47 gearing, lowered, straped) and sent me into the gaurd rail. Didnt hit it thank god
Next thing..Tried a different rider. Dr Joe launched the same as I..threw clutch away and pin throttle. BIG wheelie..1.81 60ft.
2nd pass..released clucth slower and roll throttle. Big BOG. 1.74 60ft.
3rd pass..Slide clutch and quicker throttle.. BOG 1.69 60ft and 9.79 at 143. 1/8 was 6.384.
I need to go up atleast one more on the rear, shifting into 5th right before the finish line.
On these passes I removed ALL weight on the fingers.
Dean..how do your clutches wear?..Stacking them that way do you need to service after every race? I figured 2 fibers against eachother would shread themselves. Thanks for the input guys...Chris

I ran the same clutchpack all last season. I recently found a complete ZRX clutch basket on eBay ($50) and swapped out all my plates, but ended up putting the old fibers back in, as they are 'seasoned' (harder) and still within spec. I did swap out a few steels now and then last year, but mostly when I had set up the clutch too loose and smoked it on the big end. According to Jay Regan of MRE, a properly set up lockup will not burn plates. Do place the goofy plates on the outside though - toward the pressure plate, and of course place the sharp edge of the steels to the inside. -Dean

Hey, I would change up your gearing a little bit. Maybe try 17 50 or 16 45 or so....your gearing will make you wheelie in first too.....

Before I asked some folks about it, I tried the steels both ways, and found the clutch very grabby and prone to wear when the sharp edge is out. Since then several people have told me the same thing. Have you ever tried it the other way Dave?

once you have it dialed you should be able to leave it alone. You can make fine adjustments with launch rpm.
