I didn't see this explanation anywhere up above, so I'll go out on a little bit of a limb here and say:

To determine the optimum shift point, you only need to know A. your max HP RPM, and how much RPM dropoff you'll get on the shift.

Imagine the peak HP curve, you want to shift just past the peak ('X' #RPM) so that after the shift, you are at that same number of RPM BEFORE the peak. ie. if peak were 11,000rpm, and you shifted at 11.500, you SHOULD fall to 10,500 after the shift.

Obviously, given the gearing spreads, this changes just slightly for each gear. (1st - 6th gear ratio spacing) I wouldn't say it's enough for you to worry about though.

12s make GOOD power all the way to the rev limiter so...shifting as close to the limiter as possible...without hitting it works for us...shift light is usually set at 11,375...THE TACH WILL READ HIGHER THAN THAT!!!

1361 we built makes...max 210HP and STILL HAS 208hp AT THE LIMITER so I wouldn't even short-shift that motor unless I had to...to keep the wheel from coming up too high ...

amen!

Hey Kev, if you're still around,.......I'm curious as to whether your reference 1361 is using stock cams or aftermarket.

I've always wondered how much more motor the stock cams could handle before the power started coming down the curve. It sure doesn't sound like they are any kind of limiting factor! That would be cool to know.

Stock cams BA...

CAN'T wait to ride the bike again...I only got to ride it about 5-miles (in city) after I mapped it at 500 miles on the new motor...
3-over Muzzys swingarm...it comes up in 2nd gear like a stocker (motor/wheelbase) does in 1st

I think it's incredible how the power is still there at rev-lilmit even with the 1361

We are building a Muzzys Billet Block ZX12 now (block on back order )...it WILL have cams
Sorry to say we won't run the motor with stock cams because we have to send them in for cores...
HMMM...I DO have an extra set of stock cams but...I don't know if the owner would want us to use his bike for testing...
It would also be a pain to do the testing because I would want the motor to have some miles on it before the testing...
CRAP...I NEED to get out of debt so I can have MY OWN ZX12 for ummm...TESTING
Nuther problem (time/money wise) is...I want (AND WILL GET) a ZRX and...
It WILL have Fuel Injection on it before I'm done with it!!!

I run 17t & 49t rear, I was told to try a 46 rear, how is this 16 & 17 with the 51. what size are you & what size motor, do you have cams, mph and time are you running? wondering if I should try ?? I've learned that all of this comes in to play when trying to find the right gearing, but for a small frame person this could be to much gearing and loose good power..

49 is too big with the 16 on front.
We have had GREAT success with the 17/51 gear though...
