head question
While the motor was apart, I figured I would lap the valves a little. The exhaust had this gummy deposits in the port. I had to scrape it to clean off some of it. I think I will bring it to work to use the parts washer on it. Why would it have this much gunk? Oil or gas?

lousy pics but

one cylinder looked like the intake was smoothed out some when I had the valves done.

Noticed the bad gasket which is why I am changing it back to a stock cylinder.

Might want to surface that head a little while your cleaning everything up. New seals don't cost too much either. Since the head is out maybe cut the seats as well. Make sure the block is straight too.
Just my idiots 2 cents.

Yes, the only time it sealed was when the compression ratio was lower. Those seals have only about 2-300 miles on them since the head was done. I am not much of a mechanic and figure it is time to back track a little. Fix the head gasket issue and see if the plugs stop fouling. Would having the cams set at 105/105 be too much overlap for long periods of riding at low rpms? I am usually in the 3-4000 range on the street. If that doesn't help, I want to take a better look at the charging system. My brother thinks the spark should be stronger then it is but can only judge by a car standard.

if the head was flat and the block was flat when it was assembled, i don't know why the HG would leak accross the cyl??? My Busa has a VERY skinny area between the cyl and even at 18:1 CR it doesn't leak. But ea time i pull it down i have to have the block skimmed to keep it flat.
You can up the spark by putting something like an ARC-2 on it, but it really shouldn't need it.
I'm not much of a mechanic either, so alot of this stuff is a mystery to me.

I don't know why either, but after being skimmed and lapped, it still doesn't hold. Three years of playing around with it is enough for me.

have you checked te valve stem for bend? get yourself some V blocks and a dial indicator and do a runout on the valve face and stem. iwhen you lapped did you use machinist's dye to give yourself a witness mark? the area lapped i THINK shouls only fall to around .030" or something like that. not alot of seat. too much is actually bad. too little is bad in other ways.
BEST best best way i've found to clean shit like that is to spray it with easy off oven cleaner. let it sit for a while.. then come back and wipe the head clean with a rag. literally. it's a thing of beauty and you will sing my name in praise when you try this next time. lol
the marks that look like porting or polishing marks in the intake are factory marks from where they bored the ports to accept the valve seats.
skim is never (obviously.. lol) gonna affect the valve seat.. unless the dude takes out.. oh, .400"
THEN it'll influence the seat just a little bit. bahaaa
if you're not getting it cleaned and sealed with a quick 30 second lap, then you will need to recut the seat angle and relap. personally if the valve has any indication of burn on the seat and you don't think you can send it to someone with a serdi machine or fix it yourself, then replace the valve, touch the seat with a cutting stone, relap and it otta hold alllll day long.
a quick alternative to skimming is lapping. tim has outlined some info on surface RA in some other thread somewhere.. but as well RA will be specified by the gasket maker in most cases.

I'll try the oven cleaner. Trying to not spend any more money on the 12 because I might switch over to the dark side. I am thinking about buying an older busa.
