Poll Question: Still braking frictions
Hi guy,
I'm still breaking my frictions in my 05 ZX-12. I'm going through my clutch every time out to the track and get about 8 passes out of it. I’m really not burning material away and making sure my stack height is 2.28-2.29 with about 3-4 brand new frictions (11 steels and 12 frictions setup). Drilled interbasket with a three sided sanded down pull pin (for oil cooling). I’m running heavy springs and sanded down flat steel every time out. Gearing is 2 down four up with eight over arm. Doing high 1.4 60's with the clutch lever completely out before the 60ft. Leaving at 7 grand. Motor is completely stock other then pipe, pc3, and E85. I am open to all suggestions. Thanks you guys in advance for your thoughts!

Probably ready for a Billet basket....And maybe the heavy springs are shocking the pack to hard along with the basket.....I have an 02 and a billet basket 2.0 steels, lockup clutch, and never had a broken fiber plate in 4 years....What is your weight too....Are you cooling the pack down between pass`s???

I have a billet basket already and unfortunately i just found a crack in it. (I think due to the broken frictions). I do like the idea of a lockup and softer springs. I'll try the stock springs next time out for an experimental purposes only. I am 160lbs and usually make two passes then let the bike sit for 30 minutes or so. I use my belt sander to make sure my steels are flat and zero glaze (circular motion by hand) I believe its 80 grit. The part number I use is 13088-1131. I got a ton on sale, so I stocked up but it looks like this is the number for the most out friction in the OEM pack but once again this is only three or four in the pack. The rest was just decent medium use.

Well you have to get another basket to eliminate that as the cause first....
But 80 grit seems pretty dang rough for taking the glaze off....I use something like a scotch brite pad to break the glaze....Well ya got no weight problem(160 lbs) and you are cooling everything off good too.....Probably should invest in a new set of steels if you are getting another basket now....

Why not try one pass and let it cool?I would think with a belt you might get uneven wear on the steels.

In my opinion the flat backing of the belt sander is the best way to flatten your plates. Since I'm sanding by hand on the flat surface the 80 grit is spread out over the entire steel opposed to someone sanding with there finger one quarter at of the steel at a time. But if you guys think that the steels are to rough and biting the frictions to hard a braking them then I'll try another technique. Thanks again for your thoughts

80!! damn go to 400 or 600. you want them smooth... get rid of the ones you hit with 80
let the bike cool after each pass. 10-15 min

Joey, bring all of your steels over and we'll check them on my granite to see of they are flat. I've got a cabinet that we can glass bead your steels also.

when i pull out and have the lever out by the tree i brake frictions. not as many as you but i do not get supprised when it happens. for me i know it when i have the clutch in and the bike creeps with the revs up to launch.

Hey guys,
Thanks again for all of the advice and help. Well i went out over the weekend and made 15 passes and did not brake one friction! Woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I changed my basket, matching hub, correct frictions (not part #13088-1131 for outside aluminum only) and all new steels (zero sanding). Thank you guys for all of the help. Interesting thing i noticed all of the broken frictions i had where all part #13088-1131. The outside friction has a larger size friction pad oposed to the inside ones. dont know why but it allow us to tell us which ones are which. Interesting huh?
Thanks again,
Joey
