Jim, did i kill it?

what i was going for it seems .. i shoulda turned the ramp-down time to 0 maybe when i pulled the torch out of the port..

i'm not even sure what those seats are made of? upon close inspection it looks like theres a good chance that a good valve lapping may fix this.. i next guess worst case recutting the seat.
WORST case ( which will totally suck) is the head is trashed.

damn it if my firt time welding on a head doesn't look TOO bad tho?

i need to invest in a TIG pencil

btw. as of this second, i went ahead, welded up #3 and #2. the came out perfect.. so.. if i trashed this head that really sucks. if i didn't then i am pretty happy.

heres how #2 came out. 1,2 and 3 are perfect.
really hope 4 can be fixed!! haha

hahaha no sir!!. man i was doin GOOD afterwards tho! they all came out perfect and i formed a nice technique for doing it with the bigass #5 cup or whatever it is.. but i was really disappointed when it arced to the seat.

i man be able to go 1MM oversized and call it a day.

lol true.. i'm not mad.. either way i learned something i was unsure of before.. i would rather trash something of mine than a customers because i got cocky and thought i could do it. not i KNOW i can and i know the do's and dont's.

it'd still be nice if i can fix it tho!!

I would be scared to run that. Jim put OS bronze seats in my head so its easily fixed. i doubt you would even need to get os valves.

i am a bit hesitant too, scott. thus why i need a pro's advice on what the next step is.. paperweight, fix, etc.. lol

wonder if mine would benefit from bronze seats? i kinda wanted to keep this as a budget build.. but i guess that's not going to happen!

i wish i had a damn phone so i could call him.. lol
better yet i wish i had money so i wouldn't have to worry about a budget built

doesn't look that bad to me, didn't hurt the seat.
I'd run it.

If it worries you just have that one seat replaced.
going all bronze seats is expensive and IMO for normal motors/applications (even turbos) not needed.

It should be fine. The main thing is you have to worry about shrinking the seat from heat.

When we remove the iron seats in a head we shrink the seats with a MIG and knock the seats out.

Just a side note... dont bother welding up those holes anymore. It doesnt hurt anything to leave them in there as long as they are capped or plugged off on the other end.
We wend them up on gen 1 busas just so the customer doesnt have to buy blockoff plates.
On kawis and gen 2 busas and gsxr's we never weld them.

You will need to do a valvejob on that head thou. Chances are the seat will have some runout from welding that close to it. The aluminum shrinks when it cools from wending and may have caused a low spot distorting the seat. You can check it with a runout gauge if you have one or just have a valve job done to be sure.

Nice welding thou.

On the GPZ/J model heads we would just tap and run an allen head threaded plug into the hole and be done with it....

ahh. well, consider me "learned" on this, then!

other than just he lapping stuff, i would seem to think a valve job is something i can do myself?

if not then maybe once i get some money saved after i start workin again i'll ship this hunk of crap to you and you can work a miracle?

lol thanks for the welding compliment. i've gotten quite accustomed to this machine over the last couple years. its a great machine and does it all. glad i got it.

stuart, on the motor thats in my bike now, that is what i did exactly. tapped it, then ran a "wrong sized thread" bolt down into the hole to seal it up nice. i've seen them welded shut too. just wasn't sure if i'd benefit from welding in the port but i guess not!! haha.

thanks so much for the info guys.
Jim, if the valve job is something i can do, i'm all about it. if not, then shoot me a price and we'll try to set something up.

WH, Im pretty sure Paul was refering to the allen pipe thread plugs(proper thread, good seal). you can even get nice anodized plugs if you are going to see them, like on a car intake

ha maybe i was confused. ya. the motor in the bike currently.. i *may* have done something liek that? lol
i tapped the kleen air ports in the valve cover.. and plugged them there..
the turbo motor is the one i welded the holes shut.. you saying you used to tap the hole is the exhaust ports or an i in idiot mode again?

i need to stop coming here when i am tired and lack comprehension skills.

I tapped the hole in the top of the head where the valve cover sits...That hole goes down into the exh. port.....Does the same as welding , just not such a pita to do....

AHHhhh. ok. lol

following you now. sometimes i need things drawn out in crayon.

th welding was actually very easy one i figured out an angle. stuck the torch thru the valve side at the seat. stuck the filler thru the header side of the port. quick zap, little grind. done. no more than a minute or so per hole..

but i just HAVE to be different.. lol

That would have to be some pretty tough epoxy in order to hold up to those temps, I would think.

I had some old Stage 6 factory mopar heads that had the exhaust crossovers filled with epoxy. Was in there for quite a while even some street miles and never a problem.
