Why 20w50?

Did you build the motor to larger tolerances?

10-40 or 20-50 don't matter much.
as long as it had break in grease in it and it was primed properly before startup, if anything i would use thinner oil to break it in though.

Yes, yes, Assmbly lube....Just wasn`t sure if oil grade made any difference. It`s a NO contact surface anyways so unless something wasn`t measured right it should be good to go right????

I use 5w30 for break in, of coarse, assembly lube....

I use 5w20 to race.

I use 5w20 to break in our jr motors.

As Stuart point out. There is no break-in that happens on bearings. They don't touch anything except oil. The only surfaces that require any "wearing in" are cams and tappets and the rings.

I just got a call from my mech. about my motor....
He sent the crank to Falicon to be checked out and polished....He said Falicon did a magna flux and found a crack in the crank....This is after he installed the wrong rod bearings on the rods and it was ridden/run for over 10 miles until the rods started rattling and I pulled off and walked home to pick up my trailer to go get the bike(5 mile walk).....
He is telling me it my responsibility to find another crank so he can finish the build.....I had to hang up on him because I was so beside myself after he told me this....He owes me this build as I `ve already paid for it once already or I would go and pick up my bike and be gone from him.....Don`t really know what to do....Buy a crank and hope he puts it together right,go pick up my bike a take it as a loss, or do the legal thing and take him to court......
I am just soo frustrated....

WOW! This sounds like dejavu! The same shit happened to mine... as I had to buy a brand New crank send it off have it lightened and balanced and fluted as well as a new/used set of cases and have them sent off and have them bored and plated. As well as a new carillo rod and alll new main and rod bearings...And all I had done to a 200hp perfectly running motor was have a set of carillo's and new mains and rod bearings.... sounds too familiar!

Dammit man....
What gets me is he sent this crank to Falicon once already ,through the back door with a friend that works for them just to polish the journals, then he gets it back, installs the wrong bearings, I ride for 10 miles and the rods go knocking, now he sends it back to Falicon though the FRONT door and now it`s got a crack in it.....And its my fault....
Sorry to hear about your dealings.....How did it all end up????

WOW...I don`t even know if I could trust his work if I let him put it together with a different crank because of all the things he has done wrong or forgot or whatever he did.....I`ve already spent that much once already and it`s still a stock motor.....I am cooling off a couple days before I talk to him again......

Have him get the crank back from Falicon.

Get a low miles stock motor, and part out what you can of yours.

Your are in a trap with this guy, cut your losses. And don't let Falicon keep your "cracked" crank, send it to Marine. This engine is bringing you way too much misery.

I think you are right on Shane....This guy is either over his head and trying to get out of this somehow, or something else.....I think I`m with you on your idea...
Thankyou for your input.....

Definitely get that crank back and either send it to APE or Marine. I've heard too many stories of Falicon saying cranks are cracked. They did good work on my clutch basket and hub but I still don't trust them with my crankshaft.

I told Fionbar that I didn`t like/trust Falicon but he is the one that is doing this......I have sent KZ cranks to Falicon just to have it sent back in pieces because it had some surface rust that I scubbed off with some scotch brite pads.....I just had a 20 min.talking with him because I told him I was coming to pick up my bike.....He wants me to pay for shipping the crank back to him......It`s still at Falicon so I tell him if that will make him feel better than I`ll pay.....Told me to bring lots of box`s for all the parts,ect.ect......
Let ya know how this goes......grrrrrrrr.....

He wants you to pay the shipping on the crank after he caused the engine to blow up by assembling it with the wrong bearings?

Pay it, and run away as fast as you can with your parts. Change your phone # if needed, lol.

This guy is truly a douche, from what I can tell.

Well, finally back from his shop with my bike and motor....Bit my tongue while there because he still has to get my crank from Falicon....He acted real strange when I asked him about my crank....Sorta like he thinks they might not be telling the truth about my crank....Like it really isn`t cracked,split,fractured.....Magnafluxing just shows where there is stress fractures or cracks right.....Even a street bike low mileage crank could show stress too.....

Who knows, he may have sold it or anything. Hell, I wouldn't be sure it was even touched by Falicon in the 1st place.

Sounds like a very shady guy trying to get over.

If you don't get the crank back, consider it a lesson learned. Focus on moving forward at this point.

magnafluxing will show where cracks are, a good condition crank would not magnaflux "bad"

If I were you i would call Falicon. ask them about it.
They are not a "fly by night operation"

That said, i have been using Marine Crankshafts for about 5 years.

Lot's of bad feedback on Falicon over the last couple of years.

I have a Falicon crank in my 12R. It is very shiny.

Unfortunately, outside of being shiny, they couldn't give me any precise information on how it balanced out, exactly how much weight was removed, etc..

I had a problem with Falicon many years back, they fixed a crank for me, bought Falicon rods and had them install the rods while they still had the crank. Put the engine back together and the rods went out in about 10 miles. Called Falicon and they blamed me for not clearencing the rod correctly, when I informed them that "they" had installed the rod their next excuse was I waited to long to build the engine. After many disccussions with them about the problem they agreed to fix the crank for free. Sent it to them, they called and said the crank was cracked and I needed a new one. I asked for the crank back and they said they had thrown it away to save me the shipping cost? I've never dealt with them since.
