Drilling Fiberglass Bodywork??

I have to fit some new bodywork on the 14. Of course it's fiberglass (no gel coat), and I have to drill the mounting holes.

In the past I have had some issues with the bits really chewing up the 'glass. Anyone know of a good bit type and drill speed to use for this?

Thanks!

Shane

Last time out:

I ended up cleaning the holes up with a dremel (and repairing the mounting crack). I'd like to make some cleaner holes this time.

Use a step drill. It's the only way to fly when drilling fiberglass or sheet metal. Harbor Freight sells a set of three with TiN coating for under $10.

There is another type of bit also, not sure what they call it, I think maybe "bullet" bit. Has a starting point in center and then the outer perimeter of bit cuts first, a bit like a miniture hole swaw

Like tcchin says, use the step drill. It is by far and away the best/easiest way to do it.

The quality is very good for race bodywork. Meaning, you will have to do some fitting, and all of the mounting points may not line up.

I have done the race upper and street and +6" over tails in the past. I have the Pro Street parts to install now, and I also have a Supersport upper in the garage.

Karl, check out the link to the HFT step drill kit, above. Quite the deal, with enough sizes to do just about anything. They also make stepless drills that are conical instead of stepped, like a reamer.
