half tanks, gas caps ect
so another one of my winter goals is to cut down the gas tank, but keep most of the stock tank cover in place. i plan on moving most of the electronics out of the tail into the newly created empty space. i plan on keeping the stock location of the gas cap and running a fill tube to the tank. i dont require a keyed gas cap, but it needs to be flush mounted so its not in the way. any suggestions?
thx

thx for the pics. im looking to get a gas gap that fills the space so it appears to be oem or just an aftermarket gas cap on an oem tank.
i might see if theres a way to use the oem cap and just attach the filler hose to it...

so heres what i have so far. ill be using the oem gas cap, and everything will appear to be stock except im going to flatten out the tank cover just a bit like the one on Chris's bike

if you try this at home please be sure you dont have any gas fumes left in the tank, we dont want any explosions when you fire up the cutting wheels on the dremmel. . i drained the tank yesterday, removed the pump and float ect. washed it out with water, and let it sit over night. cleaned it with brake clean, waited for it to be dry(mostly), then lit it with a BBQ lighter. a few seconds later no more fumes

going to add a flat top with a filler tube. no more electronics in the tail.

the stock gas cap is to heavy !! use a other one - aluminium gas cap - zx 9 ??
why you dont use a rubber sleeve - between the half gas tank and the gas cap ?
i remember wolf racing from australia - used one ! ask him ? - pic ?

yes ill be using a rubber fill tube
ill look into using the zx9 cap, but the stock one works for now
the next step should be done alone, as taking a dremmel to the paint may make you feel like crying... but it IS worth it in the end . ill trim the bottom off of the cut out piece but it will sit kinda like this, fiberglassed on

say hello to the new home for the ecu and a bunch of other stuff

if you're ever in a hurry to weld or cut a gas tank, used compressed air to purge the fumes! works like a champ!
i'll grab a blow gun and electrical tape the lever shut so it blows.. let it sit for a minute.. then.. booyah! go to town.

spent the evening rerouting the ecu and the battery wires. im about 85%done. then i have the PC, efir, window switch, kill box/2 step, progressive box, data logger and associated extras to reroute aswell.... ive never soldered so many wires in a row. the only wires going to the tail are for the regulator and the tail lights

Scott, what did you use to cut around the cap? I have an air cut off wheel I can use for the big cuts, but not tight work.

i made all the cuts with a dremmel. the wheels are about 1 1/4 in diameter. used about 10 of the fiberglass reinforced wheels($12?). if you plan your cuts you can do the sharp curves with a half wheel or smaller to make it much easier

Scott, if you get a chance could you take a photo of the dremel/wheel setup? Thanks!

I made the metal cuts for my haft tank with a metal shears {you can buy at Lowe's} and a air cut of wheel 3inch
The dremel is good for the fine work but the little disc's break real easy.
