quote:Now when you take into consideration how EXPENSIVE 14 LSR events worth of experience can be, it puts a whole new level of appreciation for the skill required to run these speeds with minimal HP.
Lots of guys forget that LSR is not like the 1/4 mile where it's a quick trip and cheap $20 fee. It costs big bucks to be a seasoned Land Speed racer, not just in entry fees but in race fuel, tires, and of course long distance travel expenses.
On top of that, you are lucky to get 8 passes all weekend... so the experienced gained per dollar is as low as it gets when compared to all other forms of racing.
Good points, Mike. I bet it cost about $1000 each (if not more) on average for those 14 events..between travel expenses, registration, fuel, tires, etc..
That doesn't even include all of the other mods to the bikes. It's not a cheap hobby, that's for sure. I had to take a small break at the end of the year, just to rest my bank account after Loring. It's also probably the reason that we don't have much in the way of furniture at the house. Lot's of bike parts laying around, though.

OMG!! DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE COST OF MODS!!!!!!
I shit my pants everytime I start doing the math and remind myself of all the other things I could have done with that money.
But one must feed the addiction, at any cost.....
I bet your bank account loved those BST's. You're a bigger man than I am, I don't have the balls to drop that kinda loot for wheels. My better half is expecting my next substantial purchase to be in a size 7. If she knew I'm still dumping a G here and a G there on the bike.. I'd be sleeping the garage right next to it!

The BST's are probably the craziest purchase I ever made. You can get a lot more performance than that for $3500, that's for sure. Hell, you can go much, much faster with a $300 dry kit.
But it's part of what makes my bike "mine", and you can't put a dollar value on that.

haha, you know what's even scarier!?!?!?! I think back to how much I've spent, and then it gets depressing thinking about what you still what!!!!!!!

Rolling on Carbon Fiber BST wheels definately sets a bike apart from the rest. Probably the worst bang for the buck, but the drool factor is right up there with a turbo kit... if not higher due to the rarity.
That's some MotoGP shit right there!
Still can't believe Ali snagged a used set for $1000.... talk about the deal of the century!

quote:He can do it without a tailwind, but the rest of the setup will have to be pretty good. I ran 190+ on 175 hp, with my bike with bolt-on mods (but heavy stock wheels, etc), at 230+ lbs. suited.
I had no cut down tank, and a tall windscreen on the bike at the time.
Shane
Well heck, if u can do that with 20 HP less than me and around the same bodywgt, my chances are good. I took the 43 sprock off the back. I'm now running the stock 41 again.
How many times have u guys participated in a LSR event?
That's what everyone says their first time out.
There are plenty of TURBO 14's and TURBO Busa's that can't break 200mph their first time out. It's not about horsepower!!! It's the entire package....
So many factors play into going fast, not just horsepower or power-to-weight. Everyone thinks it's easy as throwing the bike on the dyno, making big numbers and just letting her fly at WOT.....
Those same people ALWAYS end up getting a rude awakening when their 200+rwhp bikes are running in the 180mph range and they can't figure out why all these guys with way less power are going so much faster.
LSR is no different than any other form of racing, be it the 1/4 mile or Roadracing.... it's all about experience and proper set-up. Horsepower is worthless without it.
Guys like Shane661 and Entropy have literally dozens upon dozens of runs under their belts and have been playing with set-up for YEARS to get to where they are right now. Keep that in mind when you try to compare your weight and hp to theirs.
A properly set-up 175rwhp bike with an experienced rider will MOP THE FLOOR with a virgin 210rwhp LSR bike and rookie rider...... any day of the week, twice on sundays!
Phantom, that makes a lot of sense. Well spoken. I've always had a need for speed and I'm ready for the challenge of a new hobby and whatever it takes to get good or better at it.

Need for Speed, eh? Won't be long 'till you become a Speed Junkie like the rest of us. =)

I thought it was funny when he refered to it as a "Hobby" too!
I've been getting my engine ready as well, just waiting on parts and MY new Uber-Head. =)
Quite the rigorous schedule.... sounds like you're getting ready to break your foot off in my ass!! LOL

This is just a simple lil cam test.
Uber-head? Get after it, Mike!
My to be "uber-head" just left Harry's Machined Parts newly bored for Busa buckets.
Y2K will do something interesting to it.

Not to down play anything but I call this a hobby because it's what I enjoy doing. I enjoy it more than what I do for a living. I'm never going to make this what u would call "work" because anything associated with motorcycling has always been a hobby for me. I'm not new to this. I've been dealing with bikes and running them very fast since 1984. I have had the speedo past the numberless portion of the dial plenty of times.
I've never participated on any of the LSR strips, Maxton, etc but we have pretty much made long stretches of local highways, our LSR here in NC during the time where the roads are pretty much vacant. I want to get away from that because of the legal aspects involved. I've never been ticketed for excessive speed or anything because I never got caught but I don't want to push my luck. Running from State Troopers, as exilirating and as much of an adrenaline rush as it may be, it's not my idea of fun even tho I haven't had to do that in over 10 years.
LSR will never be my 9 to 5, it's not what I do to feed the family but if there was ever a LSR position available, where one could make a good living, I would definitely apply for it. Even if I'm up from 12 am to 4am, working on my bike before work like some of you, I'm doing what I love to do. LSR will always remain a hobby for me because I will always keep it fun. The moment it's no longer fun, is when I give it up. I'm ready to take it to another level, legally. Don't really want to keep pushing my luck on the Hiways, even though sometimes it can be tempting.

I have a Bikeland Banner, and always bring it to the events, but seems like we almost never put it up; This time will be different!
