- Trick New Exhaust!! Ready to Rock!! - So...a track day approaches. And guess what? I have no muffler for my CT header...nor the money to buy one. I have heard from several sources that most of the power is in the header. So, I figured I could run it without a muffler. I installed the header, and the exhaust looked like this:
Starting it up, it produced exactly the raspy sound I expected. Even though I am going to put the bike on the dyno, I just couldn't stand that buzzing straight-cut exhaust outlet. Then I asked myself the question: "How can you address this problem while spending under $20?"
Voila!:
That's right, baby!! The $15 Auto Zone exhaust tip!
I went with a high performance model, by "3R Racing":
These guys drove the old "2R Racing" out of business!! Since the whole header weighs about 4.5 lbs. installed, I wanted to make sure that this trick new piece wasn't too heavy:
As expected, 3R Racing didn't disappoint!! 9 oz!!
Freshly installed, and ready to rock:
The perfect compliment for the Ti header and Carbon rims!!:
But, I know what you are all saying: "Sure, it's trick as hell...but how does it sound?"
Well, I'm glad you asked!:
Later this week, I'm off to the dyno...wish me luck!!
Shane
PS. I think I will be marketing these Warp12 Racing Exhaust tips for $399 each...the market is definitely out there!

I also figured I could mount a hanger to the tip if needed, without damaging the ti midpipe. Overall, I got my $15 worth and then some!

This might also afford me another option temporarily...swingarm mounted drag pegs. They wouldn't have cleared the other meg.
I am really interested to see the dyno #'s, power curve and ET with this setup. When I called Brock's Friday they told me that the new Ti meg conversion should be in on 12/1....for very near $800.
If nothing else, it will look 1000x better than my setup...for only 50x the cost.

one time this yr at the track, cant remember exactly what happened, but my buddys gsxr1000 had some problems with the under tail or something caught on the tire and ruined the end of the pipe somehow... it came apart just under the oil pan so he made a quick trip to crappy tire and got a chev ex tip. got him thru the wknd, didnt seem down on power any. he was sporting a Hindle SW the next race

When I get it off the dyno I will post the results compared to what it pulled with the other pipe. And assuming the weather is good, we will see at the track next Saturday.
I wasn't expecting to race again this year, so I kind of got caught with my pants down...bike setup-wise.

Here is a comparison of the old Shortmeg, to the new CT:
Note the height of the primary tubes....definitely more clearance with CT:
As you can see, the bends of the exhaust are very similar. This indicates to me that Brock did not want to mess too much with a good thing. We already know the pipes make great power, so that is understandable.
Next I measured the exhaust spigots for both and the pipe ID for the new CT:
First, the Shortmeg header spigots:
Next the CT header spigot:
As you can see, the CT spigots are much larger. That is because the header pipes slide inside the spigot, instead of vice-versa. This eliminates any restriction.
In order for this to be useful, the CT header would have to be larger in ID than the standard spigots:
It is indeed about 2mm larger than the standard spigots. So, these new CT spigots will definitely remove a restriction. I imagine that this would really benefit a ported head or larger motor to an even greater extent.
Just to compare clearance, here are a couple of photos. In this first photo, the box pictured will not slide under the Shortmeg header...even though it has been flattened already:
Here you can see that it easily clears the header pipe on the CT:
There appears to be more than 1/2" additional clearance on the lower rightmost tube. The leftmost lower tube is not as big as an issue since it is in the center of bike and not as subject to contact during leaning.
That is a nice header. The tip is, well....I think you already said it.
I hear you man! I will be getting a custom muffler from Area P. Kerry and I have discussed it extensively, and I didn't think I would need it before winter. Think again, right?
Add that to the fact that I am literally running out of money...I figured I would spend the money I do have on good fuel and some tuning.
In the meantime, I will consider this an experiment to see how the bike responds to having no muffler at all.

Dad said he didn't care if you ran the other exhaust. I guess you're just really anxious to run the CT lol :P. Good luck with the 8's.

I thought about it a lot. But since I am getting it tuned, I figured that using the CT header would be my best bet. That way I don't have to tear the bike back apart next weekend to remove the exhaust either. Plus I am very interested to see how it runs like this.
