What Next?

After getting back from a nice 150 mile Fall ride yesterday with a few buddies we were sitting around talking about what our next bikes will be. They all ride litre bikes and they are eyeing the new 1k bikes out for 2010. This that and the other one.

I said I'm buying a bike for the wife and I to ride comfortably on and my days of riding like we all just did are coming to a close. I have come to the conclusion that I'll need two bikes now.
One unregistered for R&D and racing and one to go for a Sunday ride on with the Mrs.
Maybe a Goldwing and a (don't know yet).

Its sad to think that this old zx12r will be moving on to a new owner. I bought it new in 2000 and was riding a "modified" 97 CBR1100xx at the time. The zx12r was a big upgrade power wise from the XX, even with the work done to the XX the zx12r out of the crate murdered it.

I've done all I can with the zx12r and I think its time to move to a new platform and see what its limits are. Maybe a Busa, maybe a zx14?

In any case, someone is going to get a nice 230 hp 219 mph daily driver stock looking street bike.

Hey Jim,

The new Concours is an awesome sport-touring bike, the engine is based on the ZX14 and even has variable timing, something new to tinker with.

You could build the ultimate commuter bike. Just think, you could live 200 miles from work and be there in an hour !

I hate to see your 12 move on, it was a great test bed R&D bike going back to the airbox insulating blanket.

Dan

New BMW K1300S for those romantic rides.
Salvaged ZX-14 non-op.

Honda just released the VFR1200F!

As far as touring bikes, which he wants to ride with his wife, there is nothing like a harley.Goldwings are the bomb but only for a few years and then they look dated.I like the BMW's tho,and the heated candy ass seats would be nice on a cool New England day.

Buy the Harley and write it off as a business expense to test flow the head. There maybe a few Harley riders out there that may want to alter their bike performancewise.

no offence but it is a shame when you buy one of them compaired to a car and all the new tech you get in a new car but the hogg remains sort of the same all the time except for the odd change for epa or durability. why diden't they make the big one a quad cam like the sportys have been to get the angles nice on the push rods? when people want one i say if they have the money they should get that harley and see if it is for them. thier resale around my area is not near what it was now so that is a big investment to get a heavy slow bike that looks cool and not like it. sofar i say 50% kept them. doesn't matter to harley. it was a sale. i my self like the evo better but the twin cam has its stronger case so you can hop it up more before the engine is totally new. there are two guys with 127" big ones with hangers on running 10.8s to 11.2 in the 1/4 and they ride them 3000mi ish a year. now that is cool. bike and rider is 900lb on them things and they move. a nother person got one of those vrod drag bikes for 13,000 new ( a lot lower than the 30,000 list) and it is a very nice bike. spinning to a 10.5 in the 1/4. at that pace it will live a long time. the guys there say to not push it in to the 9s too much or the stock vrod parts will start breaking. it is a nice bike. and for 13,000 a steal or atleast a good deal.

Na, a Boss Hoss is too impractical. I had a t bucket, I built it when I was 16-17. Its what I drove to high school. And a Boss hoss is pretty much the same thing minus two wheels.

I'm leaning towards a zx14 and maybe a Valkyrie... I like the idea of a 6 cylinder. Or maybe a concourse?

No Harleys. I have rode several and they are most unimpressive. I don't like any V twin. Not even a 90 deg V. I dont care for the vibration and total lack of power.

I've got a few months to decide. Thanks for the input everyone.

I'm trying to decide on a price for the 12r now. Any ideas?

Reading this feels like losing a Family Member!

Peggy and I also have thought about these same things that is when I bought the ZRX 1100 which I ALWAYS Enjoy riding and with the fold down Back rest and foot rest extensions and seat mod We really enjoy. I also like the 50 MPG along with the SERIOUS Speed when I want it. I friend has a Gold Wing and just getting on and off that thing is more work than I Ever want to do again. In the End, we both enjoyse the Porsche 911s she has because it is more like a 4 wheel Motorcycle than anything We have ever been in. SO on the 17th Steve and I are driving up to Danbury Ct to pick up a 1982 Carrera with 103K Milesthat I bought for 11.5K. It is all black in & Out and we can use any part from her 1976 that she wercked at a buck 35 one nice morning going through some turns

I even think it is lighter than 2 Harleys to boot!!

Buy a zx14 for sure, then build it to kick any busa's ass hands down. I am tired of all that is busa. Kawasaki needs to dominate!

sorry to say, the 14 ain't gonna kick any Busa ass anywhere, unless some magic happens somewhere.

stock gen II Busas kick 14's
built gen I Busas kick everything

I'm still having fun with my 12, but if i wanted to go really fast, gen1 busa is the ticket.

hard words but true...

I'm thinking that the 2.3l rocket 3 would make a VERY interesting project, run naked 1650 class LSR, build the shit outa that motor, get 300hp? why not?

Sounds to me like you have two issues going on here.First one is that you realize the importance of your hands at work and the amount you jeopardize that at the speed you have been riding, hence Loring. You started off talking about a goldwing or something to just go for rides with the wife. After the fear factor wore down a little, the 14(zx or concourse)or Valkyrie now sounds better for spirited riding. So would the ZX be the R&D bike or the cruising bike? How serious are you about slowing down?
Second issue, is you have oil for blood and want to have a bike for seeing what you can get out of it.That inner drive for the chase to extract the beast from within.Guessing that this has been the pattern with a lot of your vehicles from what you have said.By getting two bikes,I believe you are heading in the right direction, just don't get the two confused.
