setting up shims on the bench: Garage Barbie at work
the set up:

closer:

some shims:

Tim Chin spreadsheet at work:

Garage Barbie earning her keep:

For this seat job, Andy built a lil tool which measures how far the valve protrudes into the combustion chamber, I want 'em all the same for PTV considerations. He got all int and exh within .001".
Haven't done exhaust shims yet, but i asked him to sink the seats on the intake between .010-.012; ave shim size went down .012". N-I-C-E! good work Andy! .

I'm so glad that Brunette Barbie is wearing eye protection.
Nice work Andy! I once had a valvejob that sunk the valves progressively farther into the head from one side to the other - around .3mm difference.

yep, Brunette GB is moderately safety conscious, note that she is barefoot... I bought steel-toed stilettos for all 3 GB's but they won't wear 'em.
.3mm = .012'+/-, YIKES, there goes any hope of tight PTV, eh?
Did the exh shims just now.
I asked Andy to sink exh seats .005-.007", ave was = .005".
Man o' man he outdid himself this time.

Karl, quick question, have you ever checked lash before and after lapping a fresh valve job?

KZ,
I never lap a fresh valve/seat job, not any more.
Learned my lesson on that.
So, nope, never checked lash after lapping.

Unless you are using a single point cutting system like a Newen machine, a LITTLE light lapping is good. It cuts down any radial cutter marks like a light chatter or a plow line to annular rings. This will make a better seal sooner. The super fine annular groves also fill with carbon and help seal.
But the other school of thought is that with softer bronze and or BC seats, the grit gets embedded in and wears out the seats and valves faster.
But in any case lapping with a race valvejob with narrow seats should be VERY light and use a very fine coumpound like 1A.

good thoughts, Jim!
I always check the new seat jobs by filling the ports with water, not a single drop is what i look for and seem to getting these days.
So for the moment I'll keep the lapping stuff on the shelf.
