LOCK UP REQUIRED
At Elvington (UK) last weekend trying to go 200mph. After testing the bike on the Dyno we decided that a 12.1 a\f ratio would be safe if I was to spray the whole 1 1\4 mile length. Made 3 attempts trying to spray from 2nd gear onwards but the clutch could just not take the hit. After about 10 seconds on the spray the clutch just began to slip. I was using a 40 jet and had 30% extra fuel from 7 grand onwards. In the end I setteld for just spraying in 5 & 6th but by that time the clutch was on its last legs. Best time was 190.4 mph. Time for a lock-up me thinks.

Are you running 6 ZX-6r 2000 year model springs? I have been for 2 years and my clutch does not slip. You are putting a lot more HP to your clutch than I am so maybe you do need a lock up?

I have the 2001 zx6 springs also 260 hp at the tire no slip here, springs are much cheaper than the lock up hehe.

I was using the 6r springs in my Muzzy clutch. Maybe some thing else was to blame. I will strip the clutch out this weekend and have a good look. King, are you using progressive or not. The reason I ask is, if yours comes in progressive then its going to be a lot kinder to the clutch than just a straight 50-60 bhp hit like mine.

I found 4 warped 2.0mm steels in my brand spanking new clutch pack from Ron Ayers.
Im kinda pissed about it...dont really believe they came like that from the factory...but the bike exhibited the shuddering from the very first outing with the new plates/fibers.
I replaced the 4 warped ones with 5 thinner steels (the outer two being together between two fibers for stack height reasons) and it seemed to be running fine.
However the chattering is starting to come back and was a bit present at gainesville last night...however the clutch was NOT slipping.
What kinda oil you running?

The method steels are kept in storage can have a major affect on warping. Have you discussed this with Ron Ayers?
As far as the lockup goes; 200 is attainable without it unless you're spraying some rediculous amount of juice that overwhelms the clutch. What was the condition of the clutch before when attempted to make the run? If you spent too much time on the dyno you should put a new one in before your actual event. In my experience clutches tend to wear quickly when spraying nitrous on the dyno. I always inspect (and replace if necessary) the clutch before any big race or top speed event. The Muzzys lockup will definitely hold on the top end but it can be done without it if the plates are in good condition.

YCIS, I guess that explains the chattering you were having, eh? (I believe the general consensus was more leaning towards lack of oil)
Man, (shaking head), hard to believe new ones were fooked up. Whooda thunk it?
Good find.

Mine is a dry shot and comes on progressive but My set up is likely different I have had time to play with it on three different 12s of mine and a couple dozen others all over 200 hp no one is slipping must be bad frictions or something.

Well...it still chatters a bit with the non warped ones and some of my old thinner steels that werent warped...so who knows.
Removing those 4 warped ones (it was really bad as you could visibly see they were warped) certainly made it MUCH better than it was.

I don't get this. Me (187hp), NM (211hp) and FK (+/-240hp) are all getting clutch slip, but Wayne isn't @ 260hp.
What are we missing? Wayne are you doing top speed runs or just quarters?

I dunno what to say here...I roached my first clutch...but that was after quite a few top end runs on spray....the new one holds fine even with the bigger jets...I just need to figure out wtf is causing this chattering at launch!

YCIS they all chatter at one point or another in the RPM band at the launch, there is a "chatter rpm window" you need to change your launch to rev slightly higher than that point or slightly lower than that point to avoid the chatter.
Lorcan I haven't had any issues with slippage either (~245rwhp) just keep a good eye on clutch wear and make sure it's adjusted properly before abusing it. A lockup will help some but its not a cure for worn plates.

Guys,
I have the Muzzy with 6 HD springs, each with two washers. The feel of the clutch like that is fantastic and the grip needed at the bar is alot. But after one run, it's heavily weakened. At the last Elvington, a brand new clutch needed the entire thread of the adjuster at the lever after the first run. And the bike was slower in each run after that.
We do flyers every run at Elvington (basically an extension of the 1/4 mile to 1.25 miles). It's here that the clutch really struggles. I have only matched my best speed of last year with an extra 70 horses at the back! She gets to about 190 faster than you'd believe then just stops pulling.
I believe size plays a part in it too. Weight and the extra wind resistance will inevitably cause a clutch to start slipping earlier. When lorcan rode my bike, even gently leaving the line, it did far better with him on it. One run I swear I've not see anything pick up like he did in 2nd and 3rd..awesome to watch. But depressing for us 200+lb-ers.

Is there a reason you don't want to install a lockup? It would certainly solve your problems.
