holy shit yes the #4 rod bearings are toast . oil pan was full of gold chunks(forgot to get a pic before we put it back on for a base on the stand). piston tagged the head on the quench pads. missed the valves at least, the valve marks are from another motor build(bought used pistons).

now the suprise. i think it was caused by sucking clutch material.... how did it get thru the filter though?...
we broke the skinny fiber... WTF?

It doesn't get to the filter, it clogs the pick-up. But we need to see more before we make that determination.

Looks like the piston tagged the plug pretty good too. Yikes. That's a bummer Scott.

You might get off easy. Polish the crank, new bearings and hopefully you're good to go.

Wow, thats a big suprise...Broken clutch plates in a ZX12???...Whats the world coming to, have a small broken fiber when u open the ZX12 clutch cover ...lol

I guess you dont have a lockup???

I and my buddies break clutch plates all the time, and our motors, oil pick ups are still clean!!!

Im sure the friction broke due to the excesive heat built up by your motor condition or during the burnout or dragging the clutch too much or making back to back passes or using the clutch while shifting or the clutch is out of spec or its was real hot and humid out or you had the bike running too much or maybe its just because the 12 clutch plates are too small and dont get enough oil to them???

Sorry KZ, just bustin chops...lol

It sucks the bearings went...what year is your Dad's 12???

Scott, you should have gotten 900 passes out of that clutch.

I'm interested to see the pics of the pickup. I suspect the clutch destruction and oiling issue will go hand in hand...

Even if the pickup is not blocked, it could have just sucked some pieces up that covered the intake momentarily...

pick up had some pieces but was not plugged. Shane you may be right on the momentary plugged idea.
its a 2000, clutch was not out of spec, not used for shifting, it has a modified hub and puller for lots of oil, the plates were by no means dry, but the mtc lock up setting was way off(slipping way too much see wknd results thread). i didnt get a chance to talk to nox after making a bunch of changes over the winter. (gearing, weight, motor ect ect.) he also hotlapped it a bit....so too much slip and back to back runs = broken skinny fiber i guess.

Stuart, The 2002,3,4,5 have better oiling channels throughtout the motor...

KZ, what you mentioned would definitely due the clutch in...heat & humidity, slipping, hot lap, low tire pressure = excessive heat...

Now you know what I and my buddies have been telling you and Nox...

Wish I had the $$$ for a 14, then i wouldnt have to worry about the clutch half as much as...But then the 14 clutch has different issues, its always something...lol...Maybe the next ZX after the 14, will have a perfect long lasting trouble free clutch...lol

what did the hub look like?

From the looks of the fibers, I would say that was not the cause.......

Well, I can see the lines on the steel from the rings......

Looks like the plates or steels got cocked, look at how it broke, right on the edge of the tab......., it appears that it was not sliding smoothly........

Show a pic of the hub.

AND BTW, I have hot lapped mine and ever broke a fiber. Only time I broke a fiber, was trying to get smart and run without the rings. Made 5 passes and broke the first outer fiber. put em back in, never broke another........

And btw crotch rocket, I never said that a lock up would fix breaking fibers, that is caused by another issue..........

It just seems odd to me, that i have done 1.32 short times at NHRA events with a 7 inch slick, and never broke them, so something you guys are doing is off, I don't care what sarcasm you or your buddy john say here on the internet.

Nox,I use the same clutch set up as Ricks but I have never broken a fiber nor have I come close to a 60' like a real good drag racer,do you think the absence of the chatter rings may cause the fibers to break?I'm curious as to what would cause the fibers to snap like that.

I got REAL smart one day in the garage, and took my bike to the track without the anti chatter rings........

broke a fiber, AND the big thing was, the bike would not repeat....., 60 and 330 were everywhere.......

Brock laughed at me on the phone in conversation, LOL.

Put them back in, and it was gravy........., and I never broke another fiber......., (knock on wood)

And my bike moves VERY hard in the first couple feet, which is where the clutch is hit the hardest....., to cut low low lights all day, you have to on the pro tree, and Dr. Joe will attest, that both me, and the guy I race with, who I set his clutch up too, will cut your freakin head off on the tree........
