gearing/top speed calculator?

any of you lsr guys have one? just curious as i was wondering how fast i was going tonight with 17 49 gearing topped out in 6th (with a muzzy bonny box on my 01)

Well, 17/45 is good for 189.xx mph, with a fresh 180/55. So, you were likely at or a little under 170...

With a 2019mm circumference rear tire, 11.5k redline, 17/49 final drive, no clutch slip or tire growth, you were going somewhere in the 182mph range. BTW, check your email inbox...

182 mph is way, way off of his actual speed. I ran 17/45 and 17/46 gearing at Maxton and with GPS. On both 180/55 and 200/50 Dunlops. You *might* hit 184 on 17/46...17/49 will be considerably less than that.

But Scott, if you want to get excited about what the spreadsheet tells you...have at it!

Tim's spreadsheet is the tits!

But i always need to take 3.5% off the calculated speed (using measured tire circumference (free standing)) to get my measured mph at the mile.

Why 3.5%???
tire slippage?? weight of the bike on the tire decreasing the effective radius??
who knows.

But i do know i can predict mph vs rpm within a very small margin using the ss w/my "factor"

Spreadsheets are great, and I have a few. I can predict my mph pretty accurately too...

I can also say, with certainty, that Scott was not going anywhere near 182 mph.

Spreadsheets, like dynos, are used for comparison. As I implied, they are used to estimate your speed under ideal conditions. Like Karl says, calculate your estimate, get your correction factor using real-life testing, apply factor to next estimate, be happy. No need for excitement.

No excitement here. I just take exception to your statement:

It is worded in such a way as to seemingly invalidate other input, or make it seem less accurate. That is my issue. Do you think that you are the only one who has such spreadsheets?

I'm sorry you took exception to my post, but I'm not sure why this has become personal and confrontational. I'm just trying to help a guy out to the best of my abilities, not undermine the validity of anyone else's input. The numbers I quoted are used to populate variables in the formulas of my spreadsheet, and they were spelled out to level-set the discussion of gearing, not to discredit other opinions or to get people wound up. There is no doubt in my mind that the midline surface of Scott's rear tire would go 182 mph under ideal circumstances with that gearing (no clutch slip, no tire growth, 182 mph tail wind, etc.). Whether or not the midline surface of his front tire was within 4% of that is up to him to determine with his own testing methods.

thx guys! (ill have a virtual beer with yas just because its been a long couple weeks lol) just to throw everybodys math off I was running a 190 50 allmost new shinko u soft. if thats enough for 170 ish mph thats all i think ill need (for 1/4 mile)

Should be very close to 170 mph, as I said. I measure the Shinko at 77" in circumference. That would put your theoretical gearing at 177 mph at 11.5k. Using a "slip factor" of 3.5% puts you just under 171. And probably less at the strip, with lowered pressure.
