part three of the "story"

Well, Paul had been steadily working on the bike every evening after work. We were riding it every couple of days just to see how it was coming. The first time I got on it it backfired and scared me to death then about a half mile down the road it died so I parked it and made paul go get it. It was still a wiring problem and easily fixed. Road it again and it didn't spit and sputter but was missing a lot of the power that any zx11 has. I figured the air box would fix that. Finally the airbox and ignition arrived. Doug made the custom airbox himself and I must admit he does damn good work. Paul got busy working on it and boy is it a tight fit with those huge 41mm flat slide carbs and the airbox. He talked to Doug about a filter and I don't think Doug used one out on the salt but Paul came up with his own little customization (is that a word). Paul also had to make new brackets for the coils and tons of other stuff that had been flailing around under the seat. Like I said the last guy that owned this great bike was an idiot no wonder the bike had not been ridden in over a year! I really do wonder how he road it at all. Well by this time Doug had told me that he would be in Texas at the Texas mile and said he would like to see the bike, or maybe he just gave in at my insistance. I was so excited and wanted to have the bike all together so maybe he would ride it and give us pointers on what needed to be done. The dyna ignition was next on the list so Paul got busy and figured out that we were missing a few neccessary parts for it to work. Doug had told me to talk to Scott at Dynatek. Well let me tell you this.......Scott is almost as great as Doug. I have never been exposed to people that were so kind and so willing to help. Scott was so willing to do anything to help and had nothing but absolute praise for Doug and his abilities and his bikes. After Scott was kind enough to give us all the parts that the ignition was missing Paul made short work of getting it all together. We still needed a few more parts.........these spacer things and this T thingy for the timing or something. Paul set it as close as he could and i got on it for a little jaunt around the block...................around the block for me is down interstate 10. We live right on the highway about 30 miles from San Antonio.....three miles from San Antonio Raceway. Paul told me to take it easy for now and I tried............really I did ...............but........... OH MY GOD.............THAT SUCKER HAD COME TO LIFE! I got back to the house went straight to the phone and called Doug. All I could say was oh my god, over and over. He laughed so hard and told us to be very careful untill we get the timing stuff set right. Scott got the rest of the things we needed to us and Paul set everything and then I was out the door and gone. I went riding with some friends..............smoked em..............They all couldn't believe how lucky I had been and everyone was in awe of the power that my bike had. Everyone wanted to ride it so bad but nobody actually asked so I didn't have to say no. As far as I am concerned there are only three buts in the world that are going to sit on that bike..........mine, Paul's and Doug's.
This is part of the original ad when Doug first sold the bike...........

One assembled bottom end with +3mm lightened and polished crank and falicon “knife” rods. Crank and rods fresh, magnaflux OK. Two professionally ported cylinder heads, need freshening, new stainless valves, new stock valves, new valve springs, Muzzy X3 cams. Two complete transmissions, and clutches. Enough to build two engines except for 1 crank and rods. A second set of cases is “used once” with repairable but damaged end thrust surface. 4 sets of 77mm pistons, two sets new, two used but very good. 4 cylinder blocks plus many extra sleeves. One set 41mm flat slides, one Dyna 2000 ignition.
The chassis is modified to accept the flat slides and a very effective fiberglass airbox that encloses the 41’s for correct ram air.

ok guys I gotta go for now but next time there will be pictures and I will tell you about meeting Doug at the Texas Mile and letting him take it for a spin.
