more of the story
As Paul proceeded to go threw the bike I was looking at the title and on the outside of the folder that the title was in I saw a name in pencil. It said Doug Meyer. Well at the time that name meant nothing to me but I remember that the guy I purhased the bike from said something about the previous owner working for Muzzy.......So I went to the Muzzy wesite and sent an email to the support address with a note to Doug as an attachment. I asked them to forward it if they new who it was.
Here is a copy of the e-mail:
Doug,
I have recently purchased a 1993 Kawasaki zx11 the vin is JKAZXBD14PA000020. I hope that you remember the bike and know something about its history. I am contacting you because I saw your name written on the folder that the title was in. I love this bike and would like to know a little about it and you are my only hope. I also would like to ask a few questions about some of the modifications. Thank you so much for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.
Brenda
Well by this time Paul had the gas tank off and was looking at this huge set of 41mm flat slider carbs. He had figured out that he needed to remove the wiring harness and clean all the conections and rewire everything. Soon I recieved an e-mail from Doug.
Hi Brenda,
Doug Meyer here. Glad to talk to you. That bike has quite a history
and is one of my absolute favorites. I'll be happy to help you
out. Feel free to email me or call me at xxx-xxx-xxxx.
Doug
Well I still had no idea what I had my hands on, nor did I know who Doug was. My next e-mail:
Doug,
I am so thankfull that somehow my e-mail reached you! The zx11 is one of my favorite bikes and since finances forced me to sell my 2006 zx14, I naturally started looking for an 11 which I new would be more affordable for the time being. I have a million questions but first I will start with what I need to get the bike running right. It has keilen 41mm, smooth bore, flat slide carbs. Could you please tell me what rebuild kit I need to rebuild these carbs. I need the gaskets, o rings(i think) and the diaphram for that little part in the middle(maybe the choke? of accelerator pump?). I am so unsure of the part number that I need and your help would be so appreciated. Secondly what is the fabricated aluminum box for? It has 4 inlet/outlet nozzles and sits under the seat. Also when I got the bike it had 2 k&n filters in place of the air box. Is this the way that you recommend running this bike? I always thought that the air box was a necessary for proper pressurization. Could just be the dumb ole girl in me! Anyway I do not intend on racing the bike and I am now beginning to wonder if it is something I am going to be able to ride on the street. It has a muzzys pipe on the left hand side(very weird) and I am hopeing that the pipe is not a race pipe but dont know how to tell. Any clue? If you would be kind enough to help me get this bike together I would be forever in your debt. I think the bike at one time had lots of extra parts but I was not lucky enough to get anything. I am however expecting a custom airbox (did you make it?) and a dyna 2000 ignition to be delivered in the next few days. Fed ex will be bringing these to me from the last owner. Do you recommend that the dyna 2000 be installed? I am sure I am in way over my head here but with your help and a few answered prayers maybe, just maybe I will be riding the baddest bike around. At first I did not like the sawed off gas tank but that is reallly growing on me! The bike is painted black now and is really in good shape it has 10,741 miles. I will send pictures if you would like. Again I thank you from the bottom of my heart and would be more than happy to do anything I can for you taking the time to help me. I want you to know how much you are appreciated.
Thank you,
Brenda
And Doug's reply:
Brenda,
This is really unbelievable. Do you know that that bike is a past Bonneville national record holder? It is the fastest ZX-11 in the world and I rode it 199.444 mph to set a record in 1999. I have many photos of it, although none digital.
Many of the parts carbs, airbox, (-yes, absolutely necessary won't run properly without it) ignition, gas tank are all special in some way. Even the #20 serial number is exceptional as that bike was provided to me by KMC specifically to set speed records. The # 20 is a pre-production bike that was sent to KMC from Japan for press work and then given to me.
There is really too much to write about, I should speak with you on the phone. Where are you located? I'll be happy to advise you and give this bike the treatment it deserves.
Doug
Well you can imagine my excitement as I went straight to the internet and started to find out just who Doug Meyer was. Wow is all I could think as I read about this great man and started to realize his vast knowledge and expertise. And he was actually willing to help!
There might just be hope after all....................
to bo continued.....................
