longest stroke

I was cleaning the yamabond off the cases today and looking at where the cases needed to be ground down for clearance.Has anyone heard of cutting a hole in the cases and welding a cover on the outside of the case for more clearance?I know it would have to be an external starter but the 1436cc or whatever the biggest is already needs this.I have no plan on doing this but just wondering.

Pete,
you don't have to chew thru the cases to do a 4.6. lotsa meat left, just gotta be careful.

I dunno how far you could go with an external starter, prob then (8mm????) you'd need to go thru the cases, but in prob would use JB weld, not weld on the cases. I'd be afraid of warping them.

I already have the 4.6 crank. Thats what got me wondering if anyone has ever pushed the limits with a longer stroke.Curious what would be involved and whether the extra work would be worth it.Personally,I would rather go with a higher spinning motor(14-15,000 rpm) on a stand alone. It just seems that the 12 hit a stone wall once the 1427cc was hit except for a few with the slightly longer stroke and no starter gear.Perhaps it is because of the limited membership here and there are others out with bigger motors but if I don't ask,I'll never know.I'm a nobody but with others on here who are a lot more involved or at least on the scene whether Europe,South Africa or in the States, perhaps a little probing of their minds may yield some mind candy.

i know several folks who are running 5.0's, and could prob go alil bigger while still maintaining internal starter.

Now that is new to me.I thought 4,6 was the biggest with the starter gear.

on the dragbike.com forum, Rob Muzzy mentioned a 1508cc zx12r (a few yrs ago). i dont think they ever made it though? the thing that has me guessing is how you get around the whole cam chain thing with a huge crank.... how do the busa guys do it, longer chain?
cut n paste from DB forum:
quote Rob Muzzy
I believe the largest bore practical is 88mm. That combined with the longest stroke practical gets you 1508cc. A 1200cc turbo will get you twice the horsepower.
end quote

thats about a 62mm crank, 6.6mm stroker

come on Karl, you know you wanna build it :P
