Burping....Entropy, JC, tcchin, KZ, etc........
Just installed the Rebuilt motor in frame, everything has gone smooth so far. But..when i tried starting it all was good, popped right off, after 5-8 seconds realized the oil light still on. Shut off. Took clutch cover off to make sure I had the gear on back of clutch on correctly, it was turning. Then I took off the hose to the water pump to see if the impeller was turning, and it was. Closed everything back up and loosened the oil filter to burp it , unplugged the coils and turned over, nothing, no flow at all......... Is there another way to prime the pump? should I take a known good pump off my street 12? Any suggestions will help!!!

are you 110% certain that the oil pick up correctly seated??
if it isn't...
put the rubber gasket onto the lower case, then push the pickup into the gasket.
about 1,000,000 times easier & more secure than the reverse.

Thanks for the reply,, I'm going to drop the pan tonite to make sure the pick-up is seated correctly and also the 2 oil tubes, maybe a pinch o-ring, I dont know.......may be a bad pump rotor. Hopefully something simple........ BTW Entropy congrats on the 203 @ maxton

thanks Dane, it was the tailwind which helped ALOT.
It is very, very, very ulikely that the pump is damaged enough to prevent pickup. If the water pump is turning the pump should be functioning. Damage will cause the pump to put out less pressure, but i've had a real bashed one that sucked just fine.
the oil tubes are also unlikely candidates as they are on the pressure end on the pump not the suction.
i am betting the pickup is not seated well.
I've put that pickup on a zillion times and i still got it wrong a month ago.

I'm a little fuzzy on the ZX12 stuff, but isn't there some kinda funky dowel pin arrangement in the oil pump that's used to engage the impeller? I'm not sure how it interacts with the water pump impeller and the drive gear on the back of the clutch basket, but I suppose that's worth checking if nothing else pans out.

Had the same issue twice. I have gotten real quick at dropping the pan, the pickup was always in place. Some guys say to fill the oil filter with oil before install. That seems to help a little. I also shot oil from a pump can into both passage ways of the oil filter adapter. Then cranked and shut off after 5 seconds probably 5 times. Let it sit between each time, got real nervous, then it put the light out on the next start. So at least you are not the only one.

Dr Chin is correct-o. There is a pin on the oil pump impeller. If the oil pickup is in place, that pin is the next stop. Not a big deal to get at it, just take the 3 bolts holding the water pump on, and pull the whole assembly.

i'll look at the pick-up first then the oil pump cover pin. Thanks Entropy, TC..........Low, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one it has happened to. I did fill the filter w/oil before I put on initially ,This shit is making me nervous

I've never had a problem priming the oil pump. The only time I've had trouble generating oil pressure in a motorcycle engine was when I was using a K&N filter and the anti-drainback valve stuck closed. Since I switched back to stock filters, I've not had another issue...other than having to run a hose clamp around the filter to attach the safety wire.

just to rule this out, (highly unlikely situation) did you forget one of the pieces of the rotor? (2 pieces, one part number)
on dads bike we put a little grease on the rotor so it wouldnt be dry, plus filled the filter. bike fired up, instant oil light OUT on my bike i used assembly lube to do the same thing, not sure which works better, lube or grease, but both had instant results as soon as the bikes fired up, no light
hope its something simple

Kz, then I noticed the outer rotor was MISSING, damn rookie mistake. ..looked everywhere..Gone... Thanks Entropy, TC, Kz, Low I needed the help..I knew I could count on you guys

Wow, good thread!
BTW, I use white lithium grease on the rotor lobes before installing. Helps me know for sure if I have them both in...
