Clutch or gearbox knock?
Hi guys. I'm hearing a clunking or knocking sound from the clutch or gearbox area (not sure which) in 1st gear only when launching. Any ideas what it could be? Bike has a Muzzy hub. It only seems to happen when I lauunch hard. (Hard for me is 1.56). Thanks for your help.

Have you opened up the cluch and looked yet? start there, you could have broken fibers, which would be an easy fix.

Have you checked your chain,adjustment,sprockets???
I've seen some bikes with loose chains recently at my local track,,,they all made a clunking sound when launching!!!Chain looked like it was banging on the swingarm or something!!!Hopefully this is all it is!!!

Plates and basket are fine, the chain was freshly adjusted although it clatters a bit on the bracing of the JMC arm we are using. I don't think the noise is that though - it's coming from the engine. If it was the chain it would do it in other gears too, right? Maybe the shock absorbers on the back of the clutch basket? Kawasaki brought out a revised basket (new part number) in 2000 and we still have the original in it. Then they changed the basket again for 2001.

if it's only in 1st gear, and only when launching (ie. heavy load), could it be a gear tooth? Maybe worn or.....worse?

It's not present on ordinary riding/acceleration in 1st gear, so i don't think it's a gear tooth. According to Kawasaki UK, the spring rate of the shock-absorbing springs on the back of the clutch basket was altered during 2000. I just thought some of you racers might have heard the same noise, but obviously it isn't widespread. We're going to try a late-2000 model basket this weekend (unfortunately only on an old airfield, not a proper track) and I'll let you know how it goes.
