Maxton Report 202.59319 MPH

I went to the East Coast Timing Association 'Maxton mile' (standing start one mile) this weekend on my ZX12R, also took my friend Rich's red ZX12R too, both 2000 models. Saturday and Sunday the weather was great but HOT mid 90s both days, with a very slight tail wind if you could catch it at the right time on Saturday but it turned into crosswind or no wind eventually.

I figured I should start off easy and make a shakedown run and went 194mph on the first pass! Gotta take it easy the first pass out you know... LOL

Later that afternoon I managed a 199.x mph pass on my bike while Rich concentrated on obtaining his license passes, ending the day with a best of 185 on his red ZX12R.

Sunday my first pass I had trouble grabbing 6th gear (Muzzys airshifter problems... again), went thru around 185mph after clicking for 6th three times and finally grabbing it with my foot and the clutch. That REALLY pissed me off so I went back and blasted a hard drag launch at about 8000rpm spinning 60' on the next pass, grabbed every gear crisp and smooth and went 202.59319 MPH!! Setting a new record for the class on motor naturally aspirated of course and getting in the 200 mph club! I think I could have gone faster had I not spun the tire so far in 1st (left a nice long blackmark on the concrete).

Anyway I was happy with that, so I chilled for a couple hours while Rich made some runs. We actually ended up trading bikes for a few runs and on my first attempt I went 192mph on Rich's red ZX12R (beating his best mph by 7mph on his own bike). Then backed it up with a 191.9 on his bike again. He wasn't happy. So after passing on some tips/techniques about body position for aero and launching to Rich, he finally managed a 189mph pass on his own bike and also went as fast as 196mph on mine. He was very pleased about picking up 4mph by using the techniques I showed him. I was hoping he would break 200 on mine, but he tried several times and couldn't manage it, but that's okay because my bike is very hard to launch being short wheelbase and 25 extra ponies vs. his which has a 6" extended swingarm. Overall we were both very happy with the results.

I backed up my 200+ mph twice, which was nice. Next time I'll be running in a F (fuel) class, and spraying about a 40 shot on it. 210 mph ???

The Bear stacks really work well on the top end although we can't say exactly how much they are worth top speed yet because DynoJet was unable to return my defective PC3R in time for this event, so we had to run both bikes UN-TUNED (100% stock computer NO Powercommander). However I was using the Bear stacks on my 202.593 mph pass! and the bike felt great with them installed even without tuning! Installation pics on these can be found on our website.

ECTA closed the course early on Sunday (2pm) just as we finished swapping the stacks over to the red ZX12R so we were not able to do any comparison runs directly against the stock stacks. However we will be dynoing both bikes with/without the bear stacks vs stock stacks and with the PC3R (when it is returned to us) probably this week and of course we will make mapping changes and post the results. Next Maxton event we will also do before/after stack testing on Saturday instead of Sunday so we dont run out of time.

I should have the website updated by the end of the week with photos and timeslips. Thanks to Fast Lane Cycles, Lee's Performance, Bear Engineering and Internet Security Solutions for their support!

Thanks, yeah the surface at Maxton is pretty rough. You can see pictures on my website from previous events. I should have the new pix up sometime this week. I was using D208s @ 50psi on a set of gold 2002 ZX12R wheels that I bought on ebay last month. Pics of those are also on the site http://www.dontbescaredracing.com

Yes I am still having problems missing shifts with the airshifter and now a new issue. I will try that KCadby modification too. Let me know what you find out from Doug. I discovered at Maxton that I think my solenoid needs to be replaced under warranty because now it's leaking from the port labeled "exhaust" after you use it just once it hisses/leaks continuously and wont "reset" itself to hold pressure. If you close the bottle, bleed the solenoid and re-open it, then it's fine until you hit the button once and it goes back to leaking again. Very annoying because I have to pop the seatcover and close the bottle after every pass to keep the system pressurized.

I'll give Muzzys a call later this week to see what they have to say about it. I'm sure they will backup their products because they have always treated me great in the past so I don't anticipate any problems getting that fixed. Weather or not that is related to it missing shifts? I don't know.

Gearing was 18 (stock front) and 44 (-2 rear). The green 12R makes 195rwhp and the red 12R makes 170rwhp. Neither bike has a powercommander. I went 192 on the red 12R (stock motor w/pipe) on my first pass, gearing on that bike was 18 (stock front) and 47 (+1 rear). Stock gearing on the stock motor bike didn't have enough "uummf" to get it across the line near the limiter. For reference both bikes run 9.50 1/4 mile, green traps 150~151 stock wheelbase and red 147~148 in the 1/4 w/6" arm.

Going thru the traps RPM around 12200 indicated (well into the red) but we all know that isn't accurate... speedo was burried for a significant amount of time before crossing the line on both bikes. We had to go up 1 tooth on the stock motor bike to get the RPMs up some at the line.

If you look at the photos I think you'll like the concrete runway with grass growing out between the joints and such. It's a fun ride at 200+ on that surface.

Mike the website is http://www.ecta-lsr.com for more info. It's located at the Maxton/Laurinburg Airport 30 miles West of I-95 near the "south of the border" exit 14 just north of the NC/SC border. It's about 7 hours drive for us each way. I believe the annual club fee to join is $50 plus $120 registration per weekend event (two days) or $100 if you mail it in advance. There are also links on my website.

They've added new rules this year- ONE-PIECE LEATHERS REQUIRED..NO two piece zipped together (they let me slide this time but noted it in my logbook for next event) and of course safeywire everything (see photos on my site) as well as kill switch and steering damper. I actually saw them refuse someone who drove down from NY who didn't have a steering damper... so they are pretty strict at tech this year!

yes that does kind of suck I have a set of one of the nicest 2 pc. leathers that my money could buy and they are Bates, and built very well. That does kind of stink, but I guess rules are rules, I can go out and buy a used 1pc set some where im sure but they probably wont be built as well.
But I sure would love to go!!! that would be a 20hr trip for me for sure...but sounds like fun!!! oh and you should definatly brag about setting the New Record!!!

Doug called me back today and we both don't know why i am the only one having problems with the shifter.I did what kcadby suggested and will report back after the weekend.I also told Doug you were having problems but he thought you were all fixed up
