Gearing Question
As I approach the traps I am either having to change up a gear or go through in redline. I am running the 17\46 set up. Do I have to go down one or up one on the rear to solve this problem.
Many thanks

In that situation go down one in the rear to let you go thru the traps without tapping the limiter.

There is NOTHING WRONG with "going through in the red"!!!
As long as your not hitting the rev limiter...LEAVE IT THE WAY IT IS...
The tach reads high and it will NOT HURT THE MOTOR to "go into the red"...THAT'S what the rev limiter is for
As a matter of fact...you SHOULD take it into the red...slightly before every shift to run your best possible times (AND because the tach reads high)...

I'm thinking the same thing as Cadby but wanted to add one thing..
I also use the 17/46, which means that 4th gr redline will be about 150-152mph.
Now then, if that makes you uncomfortable, do what Kevin suggests and TAKE THE FIRST 3 GEARS just a little farther into redline. Even if it's just 200-300 RPM more from where-ever you're shifting now, it adds up to a better ET for you, and slightly lower RPM crossing the finish line.
Then again, you might be the Mac Daddy and running 9-teens with an arm and Mickey with a stock motor with those gears!
If so, go down a tooth in back!

Kevin is correct- the higher the rpm the higher the trap as long as your not on the limiter. You should be right at finish line without hitting the limiter with 17_46 on stock motor; that is the gearing that I used to run 9.59 @ 149.66 with 167rwhp stock motor on a stock wheelbase.
However if you have a 1270cc or stroker or nitrous then perhaps a gearing change is needed; but to answer the question going down in teeth on the rear will get you further down the track for the same given RPM.

Thanks guys for your help and advice. I should have told you before that I am a complete novice. I have less than a 100 passes under my belt and my best so far is a 10.47. That was with a terminal of 140 and a very poor 1.84 sixty. I know my sixty foot times are leting me down. My bike is stock except for an Akro, K'N, front strap. I think I will stick to my gearing for now and reline every gear and see if this helps. I will let you now how I get on.

There is no way your close to the limiter in 4th gear at that speed. Get a shift light and quit gazing at that tach.

He's right on that. I've trapped 149mph with 17/46 gearing with a similar setup to yours. Try not looking at the tach and not listening to the motor. Trying running it up until you just bounce the limiter a couple times, then back off just slightly next time. Make sure you're not short shifting 1-2-3 as well. It will take some practice but it sounds like you're doing well.
