the clutch: sanding the fibers...

I my quest for clutch tweaks, the latest experiment :
I went to the track last weekend and made 15 passes on a pak, then later at home I pulled the plates and checked it out.

As usual the plates were mostly discolored and the fibers were down from .129 to .128 -.127. Hmmmm I thought, the fibers have a bit of a glaze/shine to them, let's get em back to stock looking.

So, I took each fiber and gently rubbed it abound a sheet of fine grit sandpaper. That indeed took off the shine but didn't seem to change the thickness much.

After cleaning off the sanding scubbas with alcohol, I soaked em in oil for a few days.

Tonight I put the sanded fibers and cleaned up steels back in and low & behold, my stack height increased quite a bit.

Seems like the sanded fibers soaked up oil and expanded??? So I pulled the clutch and measured and yes indeed, they had gained about .001 each.

I wonder what will happen at the track on Fri?

To be continued...

Karl, were they soaked in oil to begin with?? What about the steels??? How did they look??
I usually soak everything in oil before install. That was I can at least guarantee that my steels/fibers have had some oil contact in their life..lol.

I have found that even after sitting over night the Oil will be squeezed back out of the fibers?? something like that anyway and the stack height will go back down some.

yep,
When I put a new set of plates in I always take the steels, clean em with alcohol, put em and the fibers in oil and soak all of them over night .

After 15 passes the steels were almost all discolored some real blue/black. I took an orbital sander to the steels and sanded the black/blue off.

What I am trying to do is figure out some way to re-use the steels and fibers rather than just keep buying new ones. But it seems that a brand new set of plates has a feel to it that iis better than reusing.

Rubbing the "old" fibers over sandpaper does make them look just like new again (that dull look). sing the orbital on the steels makes them nice and shiny again. It'll be interesting to see what happens to my 60's with sanded steels and sanded fibers.

It seems like the fibers would indeed loose some of the oil while in use!!! But, you may be on to something because it may last long enough if you are only using it dragracing!!!

Great info entropy!!!

15 passes dosn't even phase my clutch. How long between runs. NEVER less than a half hour between runs allows my clutch to last more than 100 passes.

I have bead-blasted some of my scorched steels, but have never tried to sand them. I'd like to hear how they do, also!! Keep us informed....
