Mad Mike's cam timing kit

I ordered Mad Mike's cam timing kit, which is quite modestly priced (well under $200) and received it recently. I haven't had a chance or need to use it yet but my goodness I was EXTRAORDINARILY pleased with it on receipt. Far more than I expected.

Extremely, extremely nice and certainly seems very complete. Did I say, extremely nice in absolutely every aspect. Top class. One would ordinarily expect to pay well over $200 for a machine tool set like this, no doubt.

A further report will follow on actual use, but initial impression is extremely favorable.

Too late, mine is in the mail.
I have not seen it yet, but i know mad mike.
It will be top notch without doubt.
I paid more to have my cams degreed, than this kit cost.
This will make a nice winter project, everyone learns to degree you own cams.
Doug Meyer had a nice how to article online somewhere i'll see if i can find it.

While I won't begrudge having things sitting there all nice in a kit, it's still too much money.

A degree wheel is, what, $40 max?
A 1 inch plunger indicator is only $20 from EMCO.
Everything else is just hardware, the biggest issue is getting an indicator point to contact the valve bucket around the cam.

I bought everything I needed after the degree wheel used for $10 and made my own indicator point.

I agree fully that timing your own cams is great fun and very rewarding.
ther best fun for me was pressing on the adjustable cam sprockets somewhat off center, the big tuning trick in my motor now is the extra pin in the cam chain length between the cam sprockets.

you can also go to bicycle shop and get spokes that fit right in your dial indicator .that makes it easy to fit bucket.

KIT,
If you are experiened and know the in's and outs you can almost always avoid
the kit cost. The muzzy 1270 kit is a good kit for most, but some would rather buy
wiesco or 1290 pistons direct and has a block done. Save some money too.
I have a degree wheel , but could not find the right adapter to center it .
Not knocking the spread of info, but
Sometimes you feel like a kit sometime you don't.

It's also time and aggravation vs money, as well as the niceness of the final result.

Yes, I could have experimented with various things and cobbled around and come up with something. Probably. On the other hand, there are some experienced guys who have found this particular task considerable trouble on this particular bike, so I can't predict how much fooling around I would have to do or whether what I would have come up with would have been as good.

I can be sure that what I would have come up with would not have been something one would tend to feel equal pride or enjoyment in ownership in. It would have been passable most likely, whereas Mike's kit is extremely nice. I don't think you would find a commercial vendor ot machine tools that would sell this nice a kit for anything like this price.

But can you do the job without his particular kit? I wasn't saying otherwise.
