ported head, bigger valves, larger cam
Hello, I'm looking for educated opinions on hp gains.
My bike 02 zx12r carpenter built 1290
has the older porting
older upgraded cams
It dyno's 193-195 on dynojet 250
I'm contemplating doing carpenters new porting, bigger cams and larger valves on my 1290 since its getting a little tired. My thoughts is the new head porting might give 5-6 hp.
bigger valves 1-2 hp and bigger cams 3-4. But i'm not really sure.
So, if i did gain about 10 hp it sure costs quite a bit. About 2300 plus labor.
any thoughts, comments or suggestions are appreciated!

I don't know much about 1290's, but if you are already getting 193-195hp, i REALLY have difficulty in seeing another 10hp by headwork.
In fact, If you are confident that your 193-195 is not due to a happy dyno, I wouldn't do a damn thing; that is fukken mojo hp for 1290cc.
What mph are you running (what's yr combo weight & track elevation)??

Cams and more headwork aren't going to yield much on the 1290. Put your money in a +4 stroker crank first, then add the cams and additional porting.

You would have to get a stock head for him to port also right?

I am convinced its not a happy dyno. My bike has been dynoed on a mjp in phoenix and made 202.5 hp. It's been dynoed on three different dyno's in the city i live in. In fact one day i dynoed it at the shop i got 193 hp from and went to another dyno on the same day about and hour later. It dynoed a little higher.
My wifes bike 2000 zx12 has a custom map, step hindle exhaust, bmc race filter, and stacks. It dynoed on the same day, same operator right after mine. Hers dynoed 165 hp.
So roughly a 30 hp difference between the two. That same day there were alot of other bikes on the dyno.
2001 stock gsxr1000- 142 hp
2004 stock zx10r- 144 hp
2004 piped, u4 fuel, kn busa 158 hp
2004 stock busa 153 hp
2005 truimph rocket 3-134 hp
You guys aren't going to be impressed with my et's and mph because you fellas don't run at the worst track in the country. It's a mile high and the air density is often over 9,000 ft. I weigh 230 lb's suited. 9.95@140 mph with a 1.62 60ft. My best mph is 142.6 mph
Stock my bike ran 10.9-11.1 @130-132 mph. Busas stock run about the same et and mph
My wifes bike with me riding it has run 10.5@135.6 (stock height, wheel base, stock tire)
Theres about a 7 mph difference with me riding both bikes. That sounds about right for a 30 hp difference.
Thanks for the advice, I talked to Bob and told him what my bike made hp wise. He told me without hesitation my bike would make an additional 20 hp gain or 215 hp with his new ported head, cam, and larger valves. I always question hp gains and this is the reason i'm asking you guys.
Additionally, when i talked to Bob he said if i did his 1400cc package i'd make 240 hp!!! Wow!!
I originally purchased the 203 hp package. When i first got it installed and dynoed it made 191 hp. Not quite 203 hp but it was a lot more hp than i had. I figured different dyno, operator, conditions, etc. No big deal I got what i payed for. So now it shows 195 hp. It's a stone reliable package with 100's of dragstrip runs, numerous top speed blasts and multiple 300 mile days. It also has and extra 13k on the odo since i had the 1290 installed.
I don't believe I would see a 20 hp gain with a 1290 but maybe if i had the 1400cc kit. Of course I want the same reliabilty as i've had with my 1290.
No i wouldn't have to have a stock head to port again according to Bob. But i sure would have one expensive head!
I agree race4it do a stroker expensive! and reliable????

Asked Karl about the billet crank. He said he would just get the stocker welded and save 2700 dollars.

5 large...Definately not !!!
Carpenter offers the "4200" package on the ZX12 which consists of a carpenter head and 1290 piston kit, for $4,200.00...
For a Carpenter stroker and all the works...I would say at least 10 large...Remember he is putting his reputation in your bike, so your going to pay for it...

Yep, Crotchrocket is just about spot on. Drive in and drive out is about 10-12 grand for a stroker with about 1400cc's and everything(I'm talking grudge bike type motor) you can throw at it.
