question for those running a M.T. Slick
Two Questions.
#1 How many runs do you get ?? I've been chasing my tail on my setup due to my tire not hooking up very well. Near as I can figure it went off at about 50 runs... Sound right??
#2 I just got a new tire and it's hooking up very well but the tire is slipping on the rim. 1/2 inch or so each run. Should I worry about it ????

Your tire wear for the M/T is normal, and may be considered good depending on the application. Also the tire slippage on the rim is also normal, especially if you run at low pressure. I've had a tire move as much as 3" on the rim over the entire course of a weekend event. Nothing to worry about there either.

My first M/T went almost the whole season before I replaced it. This past year I didn't race as much but still went thru 2 tires this year.
As far as the tire moving on the rim there is only one thing to watch out for, is if one side move and the other doesn't. If your bike starts acting funny like jumping to the left or right off the start and you adjust your wheelie bars and it still keeps doing it the tire has rotated on the rim only on one side. My friends busa did that this year and we fought it for weeks untill some one told to buy a new slick and watch if the tire was slipping in the rim.
To fix this drill 6 ea 1/8 holes on each side evenly spaced and put self tapping screws in there to keep it from moving. This solved all his tire rotating and starting line problems..

no, i am talking about my shootout tire spinning, I had it move some this year and I just want to make sure both sides are moving together.

I mark the tire and the rim with small lines to measure movement, but I've never checked both sides, never saw a reason to. The tire is so narrow I doubt it would twist much from one side to the other unless something else was seriously wrong (wheel alignment).

Race4it..
I would have never thought it either till one of the guys that we race with had it happen to him last year. And I'm telling you his bike was all over the place. When I got done with Tonys Busa we took it out to the track and every thing was fine at first, after about 4 or 5 times at the track he started to have porblems and we keep adjusting the bars. About that time the other guy with the Busa came over and said what had happened to him last year. I have seen it happen 3 times this year alone. If you call M/T they will tell you to either screw then tire to the rim or get a bead lock.
So if your going to mark the tire do it on both sides, better to be safe than fight it for months..
DR JOE
P.S. To put 6 screws in the rim start at the 12:00 and go 60 degrees or measure 8.5 in stright across bead to bead to about the 2:00 and then to the 4:00 and so on. Do not go around the curve of the rim with the 8.5 measurement this will make it short.. Remember to do both side as close together as you can. Hope this helps..

if that is the problem, then I have fought it for 2 years. I will keep my eyes on it this season for sure.

Let's puit it this way, it got so bad before he changed his tire that it was throwing the bike into the other tire track before the 60' mark....
I hope that you find your problem..

Id love to get some data on how hard you guys are leaving to twist a tire like that. That sounds like more of a tire manufacturer defect than a result of a hard lauch/excellent traction.
Damn Mike.... you gonna let Bergie do you like that??
You guys keep bench racing... we'll keep going to T&T in FL.

Sorry that I found this thread somewhat late. I've been busy lately. How long your MT slick will last totally depends on what you do in the burnout box. Obviously, if you like to do the big John Force smokies in the box, the tire won't last as long as if you just spin the tire up just enough to clean it off.
I've been getting over 100+ passes on my MT slicks. I was up to 130 on the last one before I threw it away. I would have had more if I didn't find a small cut in the sidewall.
As for the slick slipping on the rim, well, there's almost nothing you can do about that if you run anything less than 10psi with those tires. I'm running close to the same setup as you, and if you're having trouble getting the slick to hook up, then it could be any number of things:
1. Your wheelie bars are too low
2. You have too much air pressure in the tire
3. You have too much static in your lock-up clutch
4. Your track is way too cheap to use enough VHT to make the track sticky
5. It's just too damn cold to get any traction.
Considering the time of year, I'm leaning toward #5. My last race at Infineon Raceway, the track didn't get much hotter than 70 degrees. (That's track temp, not ambient temp.) It was like running on ice. I was glad that I had my bike set up well enough that even if I spun BAD, the bike would still go straight. It took me about three passes before I could get the bike to hook up. All I did was raise my bars and turn down my launch until the bike hooked up.
Remember, track temperature plays a huge role in how much your bike will hook up. That's why you keep good logs. Even the difference of a few hours and 10 degrees could mean the difference between spinning and bogging off the line.
And, lastly, I have actually found that my best (and most consistent) short times come when I let the rear tire really spin out of the hole. (I'm not talking just 2 revolutions like I used to think.) Spinning the rear tire keeps the bike's RPMs up. I now have my bike running consistent 1.43 to 1.44 short times by spinning out of the hole. (That's with with a bone-stock motor and my 235-lb fat ass sitting on the bike.) It's funny how the shortest 60-ft times come when my bike FEELS like it's leaving softly. (i.e. spinning the rear tire.) When I set up the bike to hook up, it leaves almost violently, but my 60's drop off significantly down to the high 160's and low 1.70's.
Obviously, there is a trade-off because when you let the rear tire spin, your reaction times take a huge hit....but, that's a whole 'nuther lesson all together.
I hope what I put down here helps you out, Roy. Keep at it, but be careful out there when the track is cold.

You can believe that because you're not fast enough to twist a tire therefore it must be a defect.

It's a good thing your track is open all year because you need the practice. LOL :P

Let me spread the joy... WannaBe you're only getting that many runs out of a tire because you're too slow. I could get 100 passes out of the same tire if I was as slow as you LOL OHHH MAN THIS IS FUN :P
