Nitriding......

Is Nitriding a coating or a process? If journals get burnt and then polished are they still Nitrided?

The best I remember is that it's a surface hardening treatment, kinda like carburizing but nitrogen is added. It's a heat treatment but it can vary on how deep the case depth is, depending on which process is used.
I've never been faced with your second question but I'm thinking the treatment may be 0.5mm or so.
