transmission
I hear a lot of talk about engine mods but not to much about the trannie.Any problems or mods for them?I already have a Muzzy basket and hub but my last run had the gears hanging up in 2nd and I wonder if I should be watching out for anything.

auto tranny's are only good on a smooth track. If you try using an auto on a bumpy track, you're going to be in a world of hurt.

what do you mean "hanging up in 2nd"???
popping out/in 2nd under hard accel is the prime indicator that yr shift fork(s) are worn and need to be replaced.

I went to shift to 3rd and it wouldn't budge even with the clutch disengaged.Shifted fine on the ride back home.

Not only will the shift forks need to be replaced but the engagement dogs and slots on the gears are probably FUBAR as well. Replace those...

Hopefully the only thing you need is more practice shifting at WOT. It takes a smooth foot and good timing to really make is sing every pass. That's why I opted for the shift lever triggered ignition cutout box. Makes it way easier and easier and smoother is definietly easier on the tranny parts.

After 7000 mi of hard canyon riding and many track days on my 1270 engine.........3rd gear finally gave up! It blew into at least a dozen pices and locked up the trans on decelleration at @ 130 mph at the end of a strait at AMP. This failure proceeded to send the input shaft out the side if the case, shattering the oil pump drive gear which in turn sheared the oil pump drive shaft. The stump of the shaft w/ what was left of the gear on it ran around inside the clutch housing behind the basket (Falicon Billet) and bounced of #4 rod end and crank drive gear before it was spit out the front of the lower crankcase!!
Transmission, cases, basket, crank, #4 rod, shift forks, and all related cluch components were junk.
Moral of story.....Dont have any ZX12 gears undercut! This will weaken already weak 2nd and 3rd gears. If the dogs are rounded, replace the gears w/ new ones or do what I did and invest in BILLET gears from Billy Robinson at

That's exactly what I did!!!
You would be surprised how well composed the chassis was when this occured!! Rear wheel locked up and I was able to "back it in" off the track, the 12 is VERY slideable. It is very fun to power slide out of high speed corners leaving blackies!!

ive talked to RnD a few times about things. These trannys are very good, just need to have some slight mods done to them. About 600 bucks worth. Just need to send your shift drum and the gears to them and shift forks

WARNING!!
Do not undercut 2nd, 3rd or 4th gear on the Output shaft!
Both 3rd and 4th gears have an offset (the window "spokes" are not centered) and both gears get side loaded.
Unercutting weakens the spokes (Only 5) and failure, ESPECIALLY w/ higher power apps. will evenually cause gear to fail.
According to Billy Robinson....."3rd gear in the 12R has got to be the weakest gear KHI ever put into an engine"
A stocker w/ a pipe etc. w/ no modified trans should have no issues.

The $600 price only is only for services on a new or like new trans.
Start getting into cryo'ing, replacement parts and your bill could total $2000 in no time.
